Know what you mean about the craft of writing. I did a lot of archiving when StA started based on stuff that made me hot, rather than stuff that was, you know, well done. Now I tend to look for both. And if not, then the latter.

I don't know that you interpret my Spike differently than I intended him. I tend to be pretty sympathetic to him in fic, in a way I can't be in essay or debate.
