I wonder what the cultural difference is that makes it so popular there. Maybe that it's presented as appropriate for an adult audience? Whereas here it's too adult for most teens, but most adults won't watch because it's a "teen" show. Or it could be this Puritan-like refusal to take seriously anything having to do with fantasy or the occult. (At least on TV; fantasy movies do wonderfully.)
