I think the reason most shows can't do college well is that they are originally shows about high school. And so the basic college experience of meeting all new people can never occur, because the show needs to illogically explain why Buffy, or Veronica, or whoever else the protagonist is, wound up going to the same college as everyone he/she knew in high school.

The only college-set show I've ever thought worked was 'Felicity', which not-so-coincidentally was already a college show when it started.
