VM, Common Ro, Boston

"What would Stan Marsh say?"

Bwah! That was awesome. If you're going to have a cheesy moralistic typical-TV ending, the least you can do is acknowledge it with humor.

Alas, that was the only good thing in the episode. Keith's smarmy, Veronica's annoying, Logan's dull, and Piz ... well, I've been fantasizing about his slow painful death, so that can't be good.

The gender politics of this show are so weird. It's bothering me that they keep punishing Veronica for being emotionally closed off. Like, if she was a male hero, that would just be a trait that might get criticized occasionally, but would basically be accepted as the lone male hero archetype. Romantic in its way. But because she's a woman, it's not okay, it's not even an accepted character flaw; it's a constant source of tension for which the character must be punished. See the error of your ways, learn to trust men, blah blah blah.

I don't know. I haven't really made up my mind yet; we'll have to see how this rape plot ends.

Also, I forgot to mention seeing Common Rotation.

They played last Thursday in NYC, and I finally got [livejournal.com profile] jaydk to go. She liked them okay, though they're "not her kind of music," which is what I said originally too.

The show was pretty good, though a little short. I bought a copy of their new album; it's a little boring, but maybe that's because I've heard all the songs already from seeing them so many times. Still, it is rather ... monotonous. Like, almost every song has the same tone and is done in the same style. Very quiet and folky, not as energetic as I like them to be. Still, good, interesting lyrics, as usual.

I think Adam Busch takes pride in the fact that he's managed to convert a goth chick into liking his folk band. I walked by him and he gave me a huge hug, told his friend "I think we're the only band of this genre that she likes," chit-chatted a bit, introduced himself to [livejournal.com profile] jaydk, and gave me a huge hug goodbye. Awww. He's way nicer than an actor/musician has any right to be. ;)

So I flew up to Boston on Saturday and met up with [livejournal.com profile] 10zlaine. We ate at this unbelievably awesome entirely-vegan pizzeria called TJ Scallywaggles. I want to move to Boston just so I can eat there every day. It was heavenly. Seriously, most vegan pizza is actually health food in a vaguely pizza-esque shape, but this was really pizza, with a delightful crust, tomato sauce, passable "cheese" and awesome toppings. Yummy.

Also, our hotel had an awesome huge flat widescreen TV. [livejournal.com profile] 10zlaine had brought her DVD player, so after fiddling with the connections for a while, we managed to watch "Stormy Monday" and drool over Sean Bean's gorgeous ass and adorable baby face in gigantic widescreen. Awesome. I so want a widescreen TV; why can't I be rich, dammit?

Then we went to see Common Ro at Club Passim, which also has tasty food. This time we ate the health-food version of vegan pizza (it was good, but honestly, they should call it something else; it's not pizza). The audience was bigger than in NYC, the set was longer, and the band was far more enthusiastic. I guess the crowd and venue make a big difference. I'm really glad I went; it was one of the best shows I've seen from them in a while. Lots of chatting and joking with the audience.

Afterward we tried to find somewhere to drink (the club doesn't serve alcohol!!!), but all we could find were coffee shops. Seriously, do people at Harvard drink anything besides coffee? We must've passed ten coffee shops before giving up and going to the one bar we could find, the same place we'd hung out after seeing George R. R. Martin in January. It was super packed and all they had was beer (some of which was decent--they make it there--but [livejournal.com profile] 10zlaine doesn't like beer.) So we shared a sampler and fended off creepy men and decided to head back to our hotel and finish up "Stormy Monday." Mmmm, Sean Bean.

The next morning we went back to Club Passim, because we couldn't resist their vegan brunch. We got thoroughly rained on (we were taking the subway everywhere--or, the "T" as its inexplicably called in Boston--it took me forever to remember that ["Marta? Bart? Tube? Underground? What the hell do they call it here??").

Their "scrambled tofu" was more like "root vegetables cooked with chunks of tofu," but whatever, it was fresh and good. They need to work on that naming, though. And they give you endless coffee and tea that you can refill yourself; I could've stayed there all day, but [livejournal.com profile] 10zlaine had to get home.

She drove me to the airport (thanks!) and then I had to wait around for five hours because the rain had delayed everything. I got on an earlier flight, but it still left an hour after my original flight had been scheduled to leave. *sigh* But I made it home safe and had a fun weekend.

Yes, thank you. Veronica is really annoying me. However, I also see a larger context of things, and I wonder if many problems with her (including mine) are because she's not being a "typical" woman. I'm trying to think it through, but it's all very frustrating.

[identity profile] rusty_halo.livejournal.com 2006-11-15 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think my bigger problem with Veronica is the she's a moralistic hypocrite. Her judging Keith's sex life, her constant looking down on Logan, her snooty attitude that she's better than everyone else--that annoys me.

The fact that she's emotionally closed off and unable to trust people? Totally understandable, given what she's been through.

I wish the show would spend more time addressing the first flaw, instead of the second.

(But hey. At least she's not Buffy.)

I'm so over Veronica Mars. If I weren't taping it for a friend in Canada, I wouldn't be paying attention at all.

This is one of those shows that had about a season's worth of good story. I wish they could have done it as a mini-series and ended gracefully. For me, it gets more painful the longer it goes on.

[identity profile] rusty_halo.livejournal.com 2006-11-15 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree completely. The first season told a great story, and really should've ended there.

I'm just kind of watching it mostly because my friends' list is full of people talking about it, so I get curious and watch it occasionally so I can understand the discussion. That, and Jason Dohring is hot.

But if I never watched it again, I wouldn't miss it.

I'm trying to get her to start watching Dexter. You poke her, too!

[identity profile] chase820.livejournal.com 2006-11-16 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
You probably would enjoy Dexter. It's a very smartly written show, quite dark and complicated in places, but still retaining a certain sweetness.

Heh. I make it sound like a Merlot. But seriously, you should check it out.

Hiya! This isn't really related to your post (except for the Sharpe icon which is gorgeous and I might have to snaggle it!) but I just wanted to make you aware of some truly excellent photos of Sean Bean. In a couple of the B&W ones (especially this one!, he is so my perfect hand-cut-off disillusioned Jaime from Feast :)

[identity profile] rusty_halo.livejournal.com 2006-11-15 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! You are welcome to post totally unrelated ultra-hot Sean Bean picspams in my journal any time. ;)

He looks so awesome there, and you're right, totally the perfect Jaime Lannister.

Thanks about the icon! I actually posted several the other day (*is a giant dork*). Feel free to take. :)

I saw them! And I totally loved them - just didn't get a chance to comment.

I always thought Sean Bean was my perfect Jaime post-dehanding (he's even got really green eyes!) but of course, "Stormy Monday" was the clue that he also could just be flat-out BEAUTIFUL and therefore like Jaime with two hands. So in my head (and I actually hope NO ONE EVER MAKES A MOVIE OF THESE BOOKS!) he will always be my ideal Jaime.

He's way nicer than an actor/musician has any right to be. ;)

I couldn't agree with you any more than if I'd written this myself!

Some day we shall have to go see them together.

[identity profile] rockgoddes.livejournal.com 2006-11-15 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And that comment above was me 'cause I'm an idiot and forgot to sign in...sigh.

[identity profile] rusty_halo.livejournal.com 2006-11-16 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it must be you even before I saw that it was. ;)

Have we ever seen them together? Damn, I don't remember. We definitely should!

Just think of all the people that Adam goes around the world hugging, not knowing that many of them are actually friends with each other. :)

oooh! new LJ layout.

Sean Bean's ass

*sigh*

oooh! new LJ layout.

Maybe.... I'm playing with it. Editing these things is a gigantic pain, have you noticed? *glares at LJ*

But yes, thinking about Sean Bean's ass makes everything better, right? ;)

1. Bean bears a strong resemblance to David Beckham in Stormy Monday (although it's probably really the other way round),

and

2. I was suprised to see Adam Busch playing the Hasid contestant in American Dreamz (someone around my house put it on the Netflix queue). It took me a while to recognize him. He sings, too. The movie is shite, though.

[identity profile] rusty_halo.livejournal.com 2006-11-16 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
David Beckham is a sports guy, right? I don't know what he looks like.

I've been meaning to see American Dreamz, since Adam Busch is in it. Should add it to my Netflix queue....
