I'm so glad I'm moving

So I get home today to find that my roommate has broken my lamp. It's in the kitchen, and he tripped on its wire while doing laundry. Okay, but the glass part around the top shattered, and left shards of glass everywhere, and he did a crappy job of picking it up. There were bite-sized shards of glass next to my cats' food bowl. And he offered to pay for another glass rim part "if I could find one." Why do I have to find it? He's the one who broke my lamp!

Oh, and the reason the lamp was in the kitchen? Both of the kitchen lights stopped working. I replaced the bulbs; they still don't work. Something with the wiring. And I can't call maintenance because of my cats. Apparently I'll be cooking in the dark now.

And then I got my lease renewal notice. Rent is increasing by $200/month for one year, and $400/month for two years. $2800/month for a one-bedroom with a leaky roof and lights that don't work? I know Manhattan's nicely located and all, but I don't mind moving anyway because the culture is really going to suck when only insanely rich people can afford to live here.

Fuck it. Brooklyn, here I come.

I read an article about that recently: that soaring real estate in Manhattan means all the cool, funky, creative people who really give the place its juice are being driven out by soaring rents. All that will be left are the white, rich, and boring.

Which means 20 years from now Brooklyn will be the coolest place on earth, and the entire island of Manhattan will resemble Disney World for millionaires. Blech.

Holy Moses, 2800/month????? Good Lord, that's ridiculous.
The four of us live on that kind of money, rent and food, and all....
So, what is the rent going to be like in Brooklyn?

I hope you find something reasonable in Brooklyn. It sounds like Manhattan is doing its darndest to become totally unaffordable. And who needs that?

Your roommate is a pillock.

You can probably still get a studio around my neighborhood for $1100 or so. (And dude, for $2800 you could get a two-bedroom DUPLEX in my neighborhood, which is two stops to Union Square. Our new place is way less than that.)

Maybe you should come and scout out the neighborhood one evening and then come over and watch TV :)

Somebody I was talking to recently mentioned that all the cool, hip people in NY are moving to Brooklyn becaus Manhattan is too expensive.

Apparently, this is indicative of your hipness, so go you. Literally, I guess.

Kitchen lights? Ah, something I can try and help with!

Are they striplights? If so, have you replaced the starter motors? Next to the tubes, that's the most common problem and a lot of people don't realise there's something else there to check. Also make sure that the pins are fully engaged as some style lights need twisting clockwise before the tubes will fully lock in.

Failing that, check your fuseboard and see if any of the switches are down or, if it's the older type of fuseboard, check if one of the buttons has popped out or if any of the fusewire is broken (the lights will be on one of the 5amp circuits). If that's not the problem then yeah, you have a wiring issue.

p.s. Your roomate sucks!
