Why do people try so hard to force their opinion of BtVS on other people? I mean, it's not a contest, where one opinion will be declared correct at the end. It's not politics, where people's opinions might actually influence the world that we live in.
I'm reading lists today and it's like people are on a "mission" to "convert" others to their point of view (and hello, it's *not* a religion!). Whether they're negative or positive, they want *everyone* to agree with them.
We all come into this with different lives, different backgrounds, different experiences. We're all watching it from our own unique perspectives. We're all looking for different things; we all see it differently. And that's fine. That's great! Variety is the spice of life. Personally I love going to a message board and reading a vast array of different thoughts and feelings about the show.
What I *don't* like is seeing people bitching about how someone else's opinion is *wrong*, or about how one group is superior to another group because "we see the show correctly, and everyone else is delusional." Your opinion of the show is just that, an opinion; no one is right or wrong.
This is why I've been avoiding the lists lately; I'm sick of the stupid infighting, and the superiority complexes, and the gossip about anyone with a differing opinion.
Okay, and with the rant out of the way, I'll explain why I'm in a bitchy mood today. I cut class last night so that I could do my laundry (yeah, I know, I'm such a rebel). I hate doing laundry because I live in a creepy building, and the laundry room (in the cellar) is always dirty, and people steal things if you don't sit down there and keep watch.
So, I wash two loads of laundry and put them in the dryer. Then I go to turn on the dryer; it doesn't turn on. I bang on it; nothing happens. I go around back to make sure it's plugged in. Not only is it not plugged in, the wire has been cut. What kind of person would cut the wire of the stupid clothes dryer???? So, now I'm stuck with two loads of wet laundry, and no way to dry them. At the moment, my clothes are strung throughout my bedroom, hanging from any corner that I could manage to hang something from. This is really not cool.
I know it's not the end of the world, and other people have worse problems, but this is still really annoying. :(
Anyway, I liked "First Date." Nice pacing, humor in all the right places, etc. Andrew was hilarious; I'm very glad they kept him on the show. I thought Chao-Ahn was great; I'd like to see more scenes with her. I actually liked Willow in this one; her conversation with Buffy was great. I loved how Willow and Principal Wood laughed at Buffy's "counseling skills." I'm glad that we weren't actually expected to buy that self-obsessed Buffy, who talks down to her students and can't see anything outside of her own perspective, is a decent counselor. I didn't even mind Xander in this episode; his scenes with his date were cute. And Ashanti did a fine job.
Buffy's speech about how Spike can be a better man fell flat to me, which is sad, because if she had said it last season I would have been in heaven. But now that he has a soul, she's not exactly taking a risk. She's just giving the typical line about how creatures with souls can be good. *sigh* How I wish she had behaved this way last year.....
And Spilliam continues to disappoint me. He's just so. damn. boring. Remember when Spike had *passion*? And *snark*? Remember when he could fight a demon of the week and actually get some decent hits in without getting his ass kicked? This new character is so dull; he's exactly what I feared when I found out about Spike getting a soul. Can we please have soulless Spike back now? Y'know, like late season five/early season six struggling to do the right thing but not actually knowing what it is Spike? With the duster and the motorcycle and the honesty and the protectiveness toward Dawn?
I guess I could just go read Necessarily Evils for the millionth time...
Oh, and I should mention: I noticed recently that wiseacress has a new fic, called "Abeyance." It's not about Spike, although he does get a nice cameo appearance. I liked it anyway, though, because wiseacress has such an amazing way with words. I adore everything that she writes. (I'm also quite fond of her S/A secret slasha story "Beggars Would Ride").
And finally: I am absolutely in love with the S/X ad at TWOP today.
