Movie Meme

So there's that movie meme that everyone's doing.

1. Total number of films I have on DVD and video:
I actually have no idea. I'd guess around 100. Only about 30 on DVD, though. I don't usually buy DVDs, just put them on wish lists and get them as gifts.

2. Last film I bought:
Well, the last DVD I bought was Queer as Folk Season Four. ($90 down the drain.) The last actual movie was Blade Runner (director's cut).

3. Last film I watched:
Last night I re-watched the original (the real original) Star Wars, in preparation for the new one. (I already like Revenge of the Sith, just based on the reviews I've read, and especially on the fact that it's helped me see aspects of the originals in a new light--to see Obi-Wan and Vader as real characters rather than solely as archetypes, which is pretty much how I always perceived them before. Anything that can shed light on something I've seen 500+ times is inherently cool just for that.)

The last new movie I saw was Kingdom of Heaven in the theater. (Meh.)

4. Five films that I watch a lot, that mean a lot to me.

1. The Empire Strikes Back. All the SW films, really, but ESB means the most to me. It's my favorite, it's the darkest, and it's the first one I saw. (Taped from TV when I was seven.) That movie changed my life in so many ways. I've seen it hundreds and hundreds of times, and have the whole thing memorized, and still find myself riveted every time I watch it.

2. The Princess Bride. Whenever I'm depressed, I can put this on and recite the words with it, and it always cheers me up.

3. The Neverending Story. Just one of those movies that I've loved since I was a kid. I was always the dork in the corner with my nose buried in a book, so I guess I really related to it. And I think it stands up really well as a film, and I'm impressed by how dark it was willing to go for a kids' movie.

4. The Terminator. Beautifully made, so many layers and levels, and totally hits most of my character and plot kinks. I love the post-apocalyptic future stuff, I love watching Sarah Connor grow strong, I love how well it's written, and the end still makes me cry.

5. This is hard one--I'm torn between Back to the Future, Raiders of the Lost Ark, South Park, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I'll be non-traditional and say, instead, my two favorite episodes of Highlander, "Comes a Horseman" and "Revelation 6:8." They sort of stand on their own like a movie, and they're certainly as good as a movie. I always find myself coming back to this, watching these two episodes over and over.

It was one of those great moments where TV writers really went all the way and held nothing back; they revealed that a fan-favorite character had once been a totally nasty mass murderer. It was stunning, yet it fit perfectly with what we already knew of his character. It was absolutely riveting to watch Methos' internal struggle, plus his external struggles with Kronos and Duncan. This is what established Methos as one of my all-time favorite fictional characters. And the acting, writing, and directing were all done amazingly well.

(I feel like, if I'm going to mention Highlander, I should mention X-Files too. I did love X-F much more than I ever loved Highlander, but I actually don't own any of the X-F DVDs. Though if I catch a Darin Morgan episode on TV, I always watch it.)

ETA: I left out The Lost Boys and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Neither has deep emotional resonance, but I love them dearly and watch them regularly.
