I'd love to read an in-depth history of the evolution of these genres....

laura, i'm not sure if there's anything available, but really the genesis of a lot of what you like is through straight up german electro & later EBM, which came from belgian/dutch new beat (neubeat). praga khan & lords of acid are the worst examples of that. but some of the better tracks are just plodding continental reworkings of detroit techno. it's really rather fascinating. if you want good histories of genres at large modulations, last night a DJ saved my life, & genreation ecstasy / energy flash are good guides, but they'll just get you through the basics: jazz, R&B, disco, german electro, & europop turning into house & techno stateside, then pollinating across the atlantic, then back to here.
