He shook his head, not knowing what to tell her. If he said 'England' it would sound pompous, and Sharpe had a suspicion that if he had been born French then he would have fought for France with as much skill and ferocity as he served England. The Colours? Perhaps, because they were a soldier's pride, and pride is valuable to a soldier, but he supposed the real answer was that he fought for himself to stop himself sliding back into the nothingness where he began. He met her eyes. 'My friends.' It was as good an answer as he could think of.
oh, I LOVE that quote - I'd forgotten how great that part was, because yes, Sharpe has SUCH A HUGE CHIP ON HIS SHOULDER. It makes me love him so much!
Why don't you like Teresa as much in the books as in the movies?
I think she's more of a young girl and more of a standard issue young girl - I like that Teresa-in-the-movies has a lot of experience and that she can teach Sharpe things, instead of his just rescuing her like he does almost everyone else (but the Marquesa!) BUT I do love the scene when they're lying in the river together in the book!
Very Jaime Lannister of Sharpe, to blow up the place and kill all those people, for the "greater good" (or for his own pride?)
Heh! And he recognizes that the reason they sent HIM to do this job is that he's just the kind of guy who would blow up a place and kill innocent people when the nobs don't want to soil their white gloves and instead they want to believe that war is like a foxhunt. I just love bitter, bitter Sharpe :P
