I probably shouldn’t have posted my “Fires of Pompeii” review at midnight on Sunday night. Alas, it gave me so much to think about that I just couldn’t sleep until I wrote it all down.

[info]jaydk and I had a lot of fun watching it; we managed three viewings, plus the commentary and the Confidential (OMG tourist!Tennant! In shorts! And he’s such a liberal! Awww.) And somehow we also managed to squeeze in the first couple episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures and the horrid 1996 Doctor Who TV movie.

The Sarah Jane Adventures: Invasion of the Bane and Revenge of the Slitheen )

The Doctor Who 1996 TV Movie )

a couple more thoughts on Doctor Who 4x01: Partners in Crime )

And here's a fic rec: a Doctor/Rose fic that I didn't hate! The Scientist by [livejournal.com profile] orange_crushed, which has a Doctor and Rose that I actually find recognizable and interesting! No tiembabies or weddings, but a genuine exploration of what they mean to each other. Plus, plot and action! (And, I admit, I particularly love that it starts out shattering the cliche by having Rose "married" to human!Doctor and ... she's miserable. Heee.)

That said, when the Master showed up, I was very disappointed that he didn't have sex with the Doctor. *sigh* I need more Doctor/Master fic! Look at this, I've been reduced to reading het! :P

* This is the kind of misogyny that gives me a headache. Because no one could POSSIBLY BE INTERESTED in a woman over thirty-five? And yet, y’know, we have men over thirty-five ALL OVER OUR TELEVISIONS in MANY DIFFERENT ROLES. But Donna! The horror! How could anyone relate!? *rolls eyes*

* [info]paratti’s reaction post to “Partners in Crime” was a nice antidote to the above. As she points out, Doctor Who has some of the best female characters in television.

* David Tennant is the most awesome celebrity ever. *adores*

* I am enjoying Spoiled for Choice by [info]x_losfic. It’s an interesting exploration of the Doctor/Master relationship, with some really excellent dialogue between the two.

* [info]versaphile’s Praxis is KILLING ME OMG. The latest chapter! *hides under the bed and is afraid to come out* (*and yet can’t wait for the next part*)

I'm not in a good mood today.

But...

Fic rec: A nifty Doctor and Donna adventure, Leap in the Dark by [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis. This is the kind of story that could easily be an episode. It uses time travel in an original way, plus has a really cool setting and great characterizations of the Doctor and Donna.

Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] jaydk!

Tonight, we're going to see Patrick Stewart in "Macbeth." I am super excited. :)

We had another Doctor Who night on Saturday, in which we watched:

* more Old Who )

* The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit )

I'm finally finishing my re-read of Dorothy Dunnett's Queens Play. (I know, it's been months. I've been reading in tiny increments on the subway). And it finally hit me that spoiler for entire Lymond Chronicles )

[livejournal.com profile] versaphile is finally posting the Doctor/Master epic she's been teasing about for ages. Chapter one is here.

And if you didn't see it: she also made a Doctor/Master archive! My plan for the weekend is to scour that place for fic I haven't read yet. >:)

(How much do I love that the show canonically gives us the set up of the Master keeping the Doctor prisoner for a year? And gives us the set up of the Doctor "settling down and caring for" the Master? No wonder there's such good fic about those two.)

Today sucks. Evil web clients are being even more evil than usual. Nothing is more annoying than building a beautiful website only to be ordered to deface it hideously by a client with no aesthetic sense. I WANNA GO HOME. *is happy it's Friday*

The neighborhood cat just showed up to sprawl on my desk and drool on everything. Right now he is the only thing I like about this job.

I've concluded that it's time for a vacation. I'm thinking... warm air, sunlight, beach. Maybe Florida? Unfortunately, Spring Break is coming up and I'm sure everyone is thinking the same. I suppose it could be fun to go anyway; just take a three day weekend, find some slightly falling apart but adequate hotel on a beach somewhere, and sprawl in the sun with a book for three days. It could work.

I finally caught up with all of the Daily Show and Colbert Report episodes since January. You know how I said I was over Jon Stewart? That fit of insanity has passed. I do read the news in, y'know, newspapers and everything, but somehow none of it feels real until I see Stewart and Colbert mock it.

(What was with Howard Dean's flirty goodbye to Stephen the other night? I laughed for five minutes straight.)

Doctor Who series four spoilers keep coming out, with all the associated wank. It's hard to bring myself to care; I'm already pretty sure I'm going to get what I want, which is not really spoilery, but just in case )

It's time for a new order of BPAL imps, and I've found eight that I really want. I need to narrow it down to six. Anyone have any advice (recs or anti-recs) on any of these?

I'm in a vanilla mood: Belle Epoque, Eclipse, Golden Priapus, Antique Lace, Peitho, Mouse's Long And Sad Tale, Lyonesse, and Tamora )

I made a deal with myself that if I finished three freelance projects this weekend, I'd reward myself by watching State of Play.

Unfortunately I only finished two, so no State of Play yet. I am the best procrastinator in the world. Among the things that distracted me from work:

* Barrowman/Tennant/(Gill) RPS from [livejournal.com profile] versaphile. (...jkljefioajkjklfdlefj... *ded from pr0n*)

* BtVS/Doctor Who crossover from [livejournal.com profile] rat_hospital. Giles is no match for the Master.

* Harry Potter/Doctor Who crossover from [livejournal.com profile] sheepybunbuns. Doctor/Snape, psychic sex, and Snape has lot in common with the Master. What more could you ask for in a fic?

* I finally finished The Pandora Project by [livejournal.com profile] calapine. It's a thirteen part Doctor/Master AU featuring pirates and a giant vampire squid. You can't really go wrong there.

* A gen fic with good Tenth Doctor characterization. Kind of depressing how rare that is.

* And then, right in the middle of getting actual work done, I was suddenly seized with the urgent need for an LJ icon of Stephen Colbert as a pirate. So I hunted down the video, took screencaps, spent an hour fiddling with them in Photoshop... and concluded that all the icons I'd made were ugly and that I didn't really need a Colbert!pirate icon anyway. Like I said, best procrastinator in the world.

Also there's this: ElJay continues to prove its utter incomprehension of the community that lives on its servers. Here's more crap to opt out of.

Oh, Torchwood fandom. You do know how to bring the wank.

Have I mentioned recently that Neil Gaiman is awesome?

And yes, I proudly admit that I'm watching Torchwood S1 for the sole purpose of laughing at how awful it is. Why? Because it's funny.

***

Does anyone have recommendations for Tenth Doctor fanfiction that is just really well-written? Any pairing, rating, or genre, but no agenda (other than exploring the characters and/or telling an interesting story)?

I've been venturing beyond my comfy little Ten/Master niche, and ... maybe I'm looking in the wrong places? Because if it's not blatant shipper!fic, it's like that one episode of South Park where Cartman makes a list of all the rotten things he's done in previous episodes and then goes around trying to make amends. Only instead of Butters making a list of all Cartman's sins, it's Rose/Jack/Martha/Mary Sue, and instead of Cartman apologizing in order to weasel his way into heaven, the Doctor does it in order to win his way back into the author's good graces (or maybe because she just wants to see him grovel).

The problem with "fixing" the characters is that ... then they're no longer the characters I love. *snuggles delightfully fucked-up favorite characters*

Here's a good one [livejournal.com profile] jaydk recced: The Man With No Name by Frostfyre7. It's a Doctor Who/Firefly crossover, gen except for some Mal/Inara (which I skimmed). Not as dark as I prefer, but it's got good characterization and a nice adventure story; it kept me entertained and I never got the urge to bang my head against the desk.

***

Tonight: Marilyn Manson! Twiggy's back! I know this band has been washed up for at least eight years, but... nostalgia! *is inordinately excited*

The big question: should I Goth it up for old times' sake, or admit that I'm a grown-up now and go the lazy jeans and t-shirt route?

***

And apparently Stone Temple Pilots are reuniting. Nifty! (As long as they don't take my Velvet Revolver away....)

Should I watch the Sarah Connor Chronicles? I almost never watch TV shows as they air unless I know that they've already managed to pull off at least one decent season. But Sarah Connor is one of my all-time favorite fictional characters, and The Terminator is in my list of top five movies of all time. (I'm one of those freaks who prefers the original to the sequel; it's just so raw. And it's infiltrated my subconscious to the point where I have nightmares about being chased by the Terminator on a regular basis.) I'm kind of freaked out that Linda Hamilton isn't in it, although I understand that wouldn't really work because of the age issue. And I'm glad that the character, and the whole fictional world, is having a life beyond its original writers and actors. So. Is it worth watching, or am I just going to end up ranting about how disappointing it is?

I'm kind of boggled that so many of my friends are getting into Torchwood. I mean, yes, there's bisexuality, but the show is so badly written. I'm just hoping that people will follow the Torchwood trail back to Doctor Who, and see how much better that show is, and discover the slashtastic awesomeness of the Doctor and the Master.

Today's fic recs:

John Simm did an interview in which he confessed to having worked as a cage dancer when he was young and needed the money. No, seriously! So [livejournal.com profile] versaphile wrote fic in which a young inexperienced David Tennant meets cagedancer!Simm. And then they have some of the hottest sex I've ever read. And the end almost made me cry. Read it here: Kiss Me Quick.

[livejournal.com profile] versaphile also wrote more Doctor/Master. ([livejournal.com profile] versaphile, I swear I am not stalking you. I just kind of want to live inside of your brain.) Three for a Wedding. It's actually Doctor/Master and Doctor/TARDIS, and it's extremely disturbing, but it's the good kind of disturbing.

[livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 wrote The Yankee's Loot, in which the Tenth Doctor picks up Scarlett O'Hara as a companion. And it works, brilliantly, because she perfectly captures Scarlett's inner voice. That woman is a sociopathic megalomaniac, and somehow you can't help but love her. I'd never have imagined that these two fandoms could be combined, but Yahtzee makes it work.

Here's another Life on Mars fic that I greatly enjoyed. It's like an episode--70s police show plot, entertaining dialog--just with the bonus of gay sex. You wouldn't think those things would blend together so well, but, obviously, they do. (Sorry, I know there's tons of slashy police show fandoms out there, I've just never been into one before.)

I've been following the [livejournal.com profile] metafandom discussions about the Organization for Transformative Works, and I continue to think that it's awesome. One of the things that boggles me about the internet is that people just take for granted that things disappear. You can read a story that's stunning, life-changing, brilliant, and then look it up one morning and find that it's completely gone.

here is me rambling on about the OTW, as if you haven't read enough about it already )

[Cross-posted to InsaneJournal]
I wrote up this thingy for [livejournal.com profile] jolielaide in an attempt to get her into Doctor Who, and thought I'd repost it here for anyone else who may be interested. It explains the basics of my two favorite Doctor Who slash ships (with YouTube links) and then links to some good fic.

(This is "why you should be into Doctor Who because the slash is hot," not "why you should be into Doctor Who in general." Also it's completely spoilery.)

Why the Tenth Doctor is hot )

Why Doctor/Master is hot )

Why Doctor/Jack is hot )

And if you're new to Who/just saw that Torchwood clip and want the quick backstory on Jack:

who the hell is Captain Jack Harkness, and why is he so hot? )

Some kind of ridiculous combination of cold medicine and coffee caused me to stay up until 2pm on Saturday night. Like I was awake all Saturday night and Sunday morning before finally crashing at 2pm Sunday afternoon. All the while thinking "this is not a very wise thing to be doing when I am sick." And reading Life on Mars fanfic.

[livejournal.com profile] jaydk was over until 5am. We watched Voyage of the Damned and reveled in the mutual squee. I'm so glad that we both loved it. That one scene, where the Doctor snaps his fingers and the angels carry him up, god, I just love it so much. I haven't felt that kind of pure fannish adoration in a long time.

We also watched some of the old series, which is the first I've ever seen of it. I'm not sure what the episodes were called, but it had some kind of mix of vampires/zombies/whatever that thing is in Creature From the Black Lagoon. Also Russians and Nazis and Vikings. And, um, it looked a lot like something a second-year high school Media Arts class would've come up with. Although I did really like Ace. After just one episode she was already more interesting than Martha in her entire series run.

Oh! And then we watched David Tennant in Casanova. It was probably some combination of DayQuil and lack of sleep, but Casanova just totally ripped my heart out and stomped all over it. David Tennant is so emotive, with that expressive face and those huge eyes, and every time he looks sad or hurt I just ACHE FOR HIM. Ack. I hate crying during movies.

I think I've completely lost my ability to judge fanfic objectively, but here are a few Life on Mars stories that stood out:

We Could Steal Time by [livejournal.com profile] dorcas_gustine has really hot kitchen!sex. And good characterization. Although the author has some weird issues with commas. Sam/Gene, NC-17.

All These Editions of You by [livejournal.com profile] dorcas_gustine is in three parts, the first of which is told from an excellent Gene POV. The author keeps him in-character while showing how much he cares about Sam underneath, as much as he'd never admit it even to himself. Sam/Gene, NC-17.

Say Hello to the Id by [livejournal.com profile] maestro1123 has a slashy ultra-sexually-charged fight scene that is just beyond hot. Plus fucked-up masochistic Sam. Some Sam/Annie but mostly Sam/Gene. This is more violence porn than sex porn, so technically not NC-17.

It’s Jus’ Magic by [livejournal.com profile] mikes_grrl is just fantastically cracked-out nonsense of the best sort. Sam/Chris, NC-17.

There are a bunch of stories that try to explain a gay Gene within canon. I thought Undercover by [livejournal.com profile] mikes_grrl was one of the better ones. Sam/Gene, NC-17.

I want to keep a record of Sharpe fic I've enjoyed, so why not do it here? I'll add to this when/if I find more.

These are mostly Sharpe/Harper (with a few Sharpe/Teresa, and some gen). Most are at least somewhat hurt/comfort-ish, presumably because the canon itself is basically Sharpe/Harper hurt/comfort.

If there is good Sharpe fic out there that I don't have listed here, please point me to it!

Sharpe fic recs )
OH MY GOD I HATE MICHAEL DOUGLAS.

I really hate him. It's an irrational and totally visceral thing, I just absolutely cannot stand him. He is so smarmy and creepy and horrible. MAKE HIM GO AWAY.

Also, Sean Bean, WHY ARE YOU IN SO MANY BAD MOVIES???

Anyway, it's entirely Sean Bean's fault that last night I had to watch the monstrosity that is known as Don't Say a Word. *shudders*

Don't watch it. It's stupid, nonsensical, boring, and unbelievably irritating. Like Patriot Games it's got a disgustingly perfect all-American family (complete with a gigantic NYC apartment, oh how I hate them) threatened by an ultra-hot scary British guy (Sean Bean, playing a thoroughly one-dimensional version of the role he played in National Treasure, Essex Boys, and Fool's Gold). It's even got a threatened little girl, and between this, Flightplan, Silent Hill, and The Dark, I'm starting to think that Sean Bean chooses his movies based entirely on the fact that they feature threatened little girls.

He's such a good actor. And he's so gorgeous. SOMEONE PUT HIM IN A GOOD MOVIE. Meanwhile, I'll just be over here with my Sharpe DVDs. And this photo, which makes me happy every time I see it.

Oh and hey, [livejournal.com profile] vm_fic just recced a bunch of hurt!Logan fic. I think my h/c kink is overcoming my VM distaste. There's some good stuff here.

Do you have any advice for vegans at Thanksgiving? Help me out, go post in the comments here.

Allen conceded! Democrats have the Senate! YES! (*fingers crossed that they don't screw up, etc.*)

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] 10zlaine! :) We're off to Boston this weekend on a random last-minute trip to see Common Rotation and to hang out since we haven't seen each other since, erm, was it DragonCon? Anyway, should be fun.

And after (three years?), I've finally managed to talk [livejournal.com profile] jaydk into seeing Common Rotation with me! They're playing in my neighborhood tonight. Yay! :)

Also, I'm in a good mood, because this Sharpe fic is really freaking funny. And I found it in the Pit of Voles, no less!
I'm having a crappy day (long story) but suddenly I'm grinning from ear to ear because I just found [livejournal.com profile] forengland. It's a James Bond/Alec Trevelyan slash community. This is why I love the internet; no matter how weird my obsessions, chances are there's an entire LJ community out there devoted to them.

Most of this fic is on the, er, amusing side, but here's a drabble that's actually quite good.

::loves fandom::
[livejournal.com profile] chase820 has (finally!) finished her wonderful Queer as Folk fic "The Man Who Sold the World."

I pretty much gave up on Queer as Folk (the show, and the fic) because so much of it is mind-numbingly awful. (So awful that even the hotness of Brian Kinney failed to redeem it.) Chase's fic is the rare exception, because she's one of the best writers I've encountered, in fic or elsewhere.

This is Brian/Michael as it should have been, dark and beautiful. It's also one of the best examples I've seen of music worked into a story, perfectly evoking a mood and an era. And it's finished, so you can read the whole thing now!

It's also got an excellent sequel-in-progress, The Man Who Wasn't There, which is a crossover with Angel (imagine throwing Brian Kinney in with Angel, Spike, and Wesley...). ;)
rusty_halo: (sp: i can't handle the pressure)
Dude... insane hoyay in old comics.

And also, I just caught up reading [livejournal.com profile] chase820's latest post of "The Man Who Sold the World," which is so dark and angsty and awesome. I've pretty much forgotten what happened on the actual Queer as Folk; Chase's story is so infinitely better that who even needs the TV version?

Go check out the New York City restaurant guide at SuperVegan. I built this whole nifty little mechanism for users to rate restaurants and post reviews, so if you've ever visisted a veg-friendly restaurant in NYC, please go there and share your thoughts. :) (And if you find anything that doesn't work or seems weird, let me know so I can fix it!)

I saw Depeche Mode at Jones Beach last Saturday with [livejournal.com profile] jaydk and [livejournal.com profile] drujan. It was freezing, but the band was good. I'm seeing them again this Saturday in Atlantic City at the Borgata (have I mentioned how much I SO don't want to go to Atlantic City again? Maybe I can get my mom to go with me...)

On Monday I'm flying to Boston to see Alice in Chains, because I couldn't get tickets to the show in New York. This does feel kind of insane, but whatever... you only have one "all time favorite band EVER," right? Even though it's not really the band I loved *sigh*.

Got a new roommate. So far, so good. I get the feeling she doesn't really like the place, though. I'm just waiting for bad news...

Real life has been so crazy and busy and stressful... ugh.

Oh yeah, I did see the Veronica Mars finale. I thought it was good, not great. VM finale spoilers )

I'm looking forward to a couple of media things: the new X-Men movie (please for the love of god let it live up to the Bryan Singer version) and the new season of Rescue Me (wasn't Denis Leary awesome on the Daily Show the other night?).

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] 10zlaine is visiting soon and we're going to see Spamalot and Common Rotation. (Haha, look at the comment they left on my MySpace profile: "don't be afraid to list us as a band you like. we promise to growl more.")

AND early June (PIG TOUR!!!!) is coming up faster than I could imagine. I've got a one way ticket to Fort Lauderdale; now I have to decide whether to go to the Tampa show, too.

Damn, I need to get my hair cut. And dyed. Not enough time in the day!!!

Oh, and I'm working on THREE huge website projects, in addition to work (I now run the entire web department by myself.)

I really just want to go take a nap for about three months.
rusty_halo: (sp: cartman died for our sins)
Oh my god. It's a Colbert Report/Harry Potter crossover. Awesome.

Veronica Mars. The last few episodes haven't sucked nearly as much as the beginning of the season, so I'll post some thoughts, in no real order. spoilers for aired VM episodes )

Other stuff...

* I had a strange dream last night, in which I was back in my 12th grade history class with Ms. Moran as the mean scary teacher. I didn't bring my books, because they were heavy and I thought we wouldn't need them, so she snapped at me and then handed out a memo to everyone which included a note about how irresponsible I was for not bringing the books. And for some reason, [livejournal.com profile] ros_fod was sitting at the desk next to mine, and [livejournal.com profile] kita0610 was sitting behind her. And then there was a fire drill, and I was in trouble because we were supposed to stash our books somewhere, but I hadn't brought any books to stash. And then [livejournal.com profile] ros_fod was feeling faint, but Ms. Moran was mean and made her go to the nurse alone, even though [livejournal.com profile] kita0610 offered to go with her.

Yeah, don't ask me to explain dreamlogic.

* I randomly flipped over to NIN's "Closer" video on VH1 Classics last night. I'd actually forgotten that Trent used to be skinny and fucked-up and leather clad and hot, instead of looking like your friend's uncle who works as a bouncer. *sigh* Wish I'd seen them live back then.

* South Park hovers in this weird territory between unbelievably funny and just ... stupid. The last two episodes were quite a contrast, as the return of Chef episode was fucking brilliant, and the San Francisco episode was just... so lame. As if those "heartland" folks proclaiming their superiority over the gays and atheists on the coasts aren't just as smug? Way to completely miss the obvious. But, whatever, it's South Park; if you get offended, you're giving them exactly what they want. (I think they mostly just get off on the "subversiveness" of offending as many people as possible, especially the groups that Hollywood usually overlooks.)

I'm too busy:

* Friday night - V for Vendetta with [livejournal.com profile] drujan and [livejournal.com profile] jaydk

* Saturday night - marathon of Jonathan from Guiding Light with [livejournal.com profile] jaydk (and she's agreed to let me force PIG videos on her! Whoo!!)

* Sunday night - WriterCon meeting

* Monday night - I'm going to the Daily Show! I can't wait. :)

* Wednesday - I have jury duty. Yuck.

And somewhere in the midst of all this, I'm working on this other thing, a really cool, really complex project that is supposed to launch in a week. I have a feeling I'm not going to be getting very much sleep in the upcoming days. *deep breath* But I can do it. And it will be cool.

(And on top of it all--I'm still sick from San Francisco! Damn West Coast germs. :P)
