You guys!

I almost forgot!

Doctor/Master is up for today’s “Slasherday” Writercon fundraising day.

Go vote for them!

(You “vote” by donating to Writercon’s 2009 scholarship fund, which provides financial assistance to attendees who need it. The application period ends Sunday at midnight EST so if you’re thinking of applying, please do so asap.)

Doctor/Master has major competition today: Eliot/Hardison, Wes/Gunn, Kirk/Spock, and Arthur/Merlin. The pairings that raise the most money will face off at the end of the month, and will also be featured at Writercon activities, and obviously, Doctor/Master just totally deserves to win because they’re awesome. ;)

* [info]x_los wrote Eighth Doctor/goosnake!Master. And it’s… actually kind of awesome? If you enjoy crackfic, I highly recommend it.

* I. Um. I think I want to see Twilight. I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW. But… it’s just… you know… Robert Pattinson is really really cute!

Apparently somewhere inside me there still lurks a twelve year old girl, whose Pretty!Boy!Vampire! alert has just been triggered. I will have to hide my face in shame and sneak into the theater hoping that no one I know will recognize me. Or at least claim that I’m there only to snark. :P

* I saw the new James Bond this weekend and was disappointed. I’m all for emotional continuity, but it didn’t feel like the movie really went anywhere. Nothing made a big impression, and I was mostly bored. Apparently I’m one of the three human beings on the planet who do not find Daniel Craig attractive, so without a compelling story there just wasn’t much to hold my interest. Casino Royale was so much better. :(

* I just read this book called The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell, about a Jesuit expedition to Alpha Centauri (seriously). It was brilliantly written, but I didn’t love it.

spoilers for The Sparrow and for the Lymond Chronicles (possibly offensive to religious types) )

I don’t usually get into fanart, but I love this image of the Doctor and the Master on Gallifrey by [info]postal152. (There’s also a colored version of it here by [info]teastainedbird.)

It captures the likenesses and personalities of the characters so well, and the scene is so evocative. It feels like there’s a whole story behind this moment. And it’s so… I don’t know… romantic, sad, and creepy, all at once, which is such the essence of Doctor/Master.

The Naming of Things by [info]ariafic. This is the best Theta/Koschei fic I’ve ever read, although I’d actually say it’s more “the becoming of the Master” than a Theta/Koschei romance. But since the Doctor is always at the center of the Master’s existence, their relationship is central here.

This story is brilliantly written, sweet, chilling, and, in the end, heartbreaking. Everything is so in-character and well-developed, especially Koschei’s descent into madness, and how he and Theta each fail the other. These two are so my OTP; nothing gets to me more than childhood friends who fall out and can’t put the pieces back together no matter how much they still love each other.

*sniffles* Now I need to go read something really fluffy where the Doctor and the Master live happily ever after.

I’ve been sorting through the, um, several hundred tabs I had open on Firefox (because it’s really not a good idea to have 300 tabs open…) and, anyway, I bring three amazing Doctor/Master fic recs:

* Burning Ground by [info]bagheera_san. Doctor + Master + Hindu mythology.

* Resonance Structures by [info]mercurial_wit. Doctor + Master + chemistry.

Which continues in…

* Uncertainty Principles. Doctor + Master + physics.

These really put to shame the notion that fanfiction is nothing but romantic wish-fulfillment written by fourteen-year-olds. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that; there are far worse things fourteen-year-olds could be doing than writing. But I love that there’s so much more to the possibilities of fanfic.)

I’m in the middle of week three of the hundred push ups program, which means I did 71 push ups tonight. Owwwwwwwwww. I’m doing the half-assed knee push ups, but still.

I’m doing this mainly because I didn’t believe it could possibly work (me doing 100 push ups after six weeks? I’ve never been able to do more than 15) and because I really need to start exercising again. I was doing so well last year; I was up to four half hour workouts a week, and lost 20 pounds. And then I got depressed, stopped exercising, and gained back all the weight. Ugh. So this seemed like a way to jump start the working out thing also.

I’ve also been busy cooking. I’m still following the Vegan Cooking for One meal plan. I like cooking and having a homemade meal every night, but I’m getting sick of the bland and unimaginative recipes in this book. Mushrooms, potatoes, rice, spaghetti, onions… c’mon, at least throw in one interesting thing per week! How about eggplant or … I don’t know, kumquats or something. Blah. But I’m taking photos and going to blog it on SuperVegan, so at least it’s good for something. :P

I’ve been really busy with Writercon, but we don’t have anything to announce yet. I’ve got my fingers crossed that we’ll be able to announce a city and hotel soon, though! Meanwhile I’m learning Drupal and spreadsheets.

I’ve been reading “Hamlet” on the subway to and from work. I’m trying not to get too excited, but I keep picturing David Tennant and OMG CAN’T WAIT FOR OCTOBER.

I’ve been catching some TV here and there. I decided that I adore Fraser’s boss, Meg Thatcher (lol), and that I’d rather watch a show about her. She’s kind of like a female Fraser: older and more cynical, but incredibly socially awkward and with that core idealism underneath. Just, she’s interesting, with her heart protected under so many layers of caution and professionalism, and her default reaction to assume the worst of everyone and to push people away. The last episode I saw was “We Are The Eggmen” so this could change; don’t spoil me for anything that’s coming up.

The next Doctor/Master episode is “The Claws of Axos.” Anything particular I should look out for in this one? I’ll probably start it on Sunday.

[info]jaydk came over last weekend for more Doctor Who. I made a whole batch of banana split cupcakes, and we had a lot of fun. She agrees that “Terror of the Autons” is way more entertaining than “The War Games.” And “Journey’s End” feels more “official” now that we watched it together–although I’m highly amused that we had to pause it twice so that we could get into extended arguments. Ah, fangirls.

Tomorrow I’m taking the bus to Atlantic City to see Stone Temple Pilots. I’m stressing about this, not only because it’s apparently a money-driven mess with a relapsed lead singer, but because I hate Atlantic City. This was the only show I could get tickets to (they’re not playing NYC), so I bought a ticket with a blithe “Oh, I’ll find someone to go with me!” Which never happens, of course, and I end up alone at 12:30am in an empty corner of a casino parking garage, waiting for a bus that may or may not show up, with no human being in sight. I feel like it’s tempting fate to keep doing this. I even looked for a hotel room thinking maybe I’d stay overnight and take a daytime bus home, but Atlantic City hotels are absurdly expensive. So, late night bus. I probably won’t get murdered.

I’m mostly rolling my eyes at “Journey’s End” fix-it fic (because, y’know, I thought it was brilliant and doesn’t need to be “fixed”) but I have been enjoying [info]dwseason5. Mostly because it’s got the Doctor, the Master, and subtext, and what could be better than that? (Well, to be written well, which this is also.)

I finally started watching some of the old Doctor/Master episodes. I don’t think I’ll have anything new to say about a serial that aired over 35 years ago, but I’ll give you my reactions to “Terror of the Autons” anyway. I’ll warn in advance that this is filtered through my RABID and largely tongue-in-cheek Doctor/Master filter.

There is nothing in this episode to convince me that the Doctor and the Master *aren't* playing one long convoluted intergalactic sex game )

Why is London After Midnight playing in NYC the same night as the Cure? I would’ve liked to see them. That’s just weird.

I went to Ikea last night. Dude. I felt like I was trapped in the hedge maze from Harry Potter 4. It took me two hours to get out of there, dodging strollers and shopping carts and trying not to get distracted by all the shiny things. And I missed Vegan Drinks. :(

I chose a different bookshelf )

Did I mention that I got my plane tickets for DragonCon? Yep, I'm going. I might want to hide under a burka, but dammit, I can't miss DragonCon. I always have so much fun there. I wonder what the Doctor Who panels are like... (the good thing about DragonCon is that, if they suck, I can always find something else entertaining to do).

I tried out that Wordle thing with my "Midnight" review. Nifty!

Oh, and here's a short post-"Midnight" fic rec: Humans by [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis. Very insightful look at the various characters.

(Anyone have more post-"Midnight" fic recs? That episode is practically begging to be explored further in fanfic. And dammit, I need something to entertain me seeing as 95% of the links on my flist are off-limits due to spoilers.)

Also: a yummylicious John Simm picspam from [livejournal.com profile] lozenger8. :)

Other nifty links: really interesting Doctor/Master discussion at [livejournal.com profile] best_enemies and two compilations of Doctor/Rose squee here and here.

(I don't know why I love Doctor/Rose so much in canon--romantically or as best friends, either interpretation is fine with me--but am completely uninspired to read about them in fanfic. Maybe because their relationship is already a lot like what you get in fanfic--full of character moments and bonding and actual happiness and it's already got such a perfect ending that I'm not inspired to seek out more? Or maybe because my interpretation tends to differ from the mainstream in that I don't care whether they're having sex or not, and I get kind of sick thinking about them "settling down"? Whereas I can't get enough Doctor/Master, maybe because the stuff I'm interested in there is always heavily hinted at in canon, but it never goes as far as I'd like. It's just the kind of relationship that fanfic was invented for. Thus the fact that I could probably read Doctor/Master fic forever without getting bored.)

This animated Master mood theme is the most awesome thing in the history of ever.

I got it here.

Also, I watched The Curse of Fatal Death last night and WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THAT IT ENDS WITH THE DOCTOR AND THE MASTER GOING OFF TOGETHER TO HAVE SEX? I know, it’s a big not-official-canon joke thing, but it is written by Steven Moffat, so um SHUT UP. :P

(Also, I really kind of want a female Doctor now. She was cool.)

Should I watch the Sarah Connor Chronicles? I almost never watch TV shows as they air unless I know that they've already managed to pull off at least one decent season. But Sarah Connor is one of my all-time favorite fictional characters, and The Terminator is in my list of top five movies of all time. (I'm one of those freaks who prefers the original to the sequel; it's just so raw. And it's infiltrated my subconscious to the point where I have nightmares about being chased by the Terminator on a regular basis.) I'm kind of freaked out that Linda Hamilton isn't in it, although I understand that wouldn't really work because of the age issue. And I'm glad that the character, and the whole fictional world, is having a life beyond its original writers and actors. So. Is it worth watching, or am I just going to end up ranting about how disappointing it is?

I'm kind of boggled that so many of my friends are getting into Torchwood. I mean, yes, there's bisexuality, but the show is so badly written. I'm just hoping that people will follow the Torchwood trail back to Doctor Who, and see how much better that show is, and discover the slashtastic awesomeness of the Doctor and the Master.

Today's fic recs:

John Simm did an interview in which he confessed to having worked as a cage dancer when he was young and needed the money. No, seriously! So [livejournal.com profile] versaphile wrote fic in which a young inexperienced David Tennant meets cagedancer!Simm. And then they have some of the hottest sex I've ever read. And the end almost made me cry. Read it here: Kiss Me Quick.

[livejournal.com profile] versaphile also wrote more Doctor/Master. ([livejournal.com profile] versaphile, I swear I am not stalking you. I just kind of want to live inside of your brain.) Three for a Wedding. It's actually Doctor/Master and Doctor/TARDIS, and it's extremely disturbing, but it's the good kind of disturbing.

[livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 wrote The Yankee's Loot, in which the Tenth Doctor picks up Scarlett O'Hara as a companion. And it works, brilliantly, because she perfectly captures Scarlett's inner voice. That woman is a sociopathic megalomaniac, and somehow you can't help but love her. I'd never have imagined that these two fandoms could be combined, but Yahtzee makes it work.

Here's another Life on Mars fic that I greatly enjoyed. It's like an episode--70s police show plot, entertaining dialog--just with the bonus of gay sex. You wouldn't think those things would blend together so well, but, obviously, they do. (Sorry, I know there's tons of slashy police show fandoms out there, I've just never been into one before.)

I've been following the [livejournal.com profile] metafandom discussions about the Organization for Transformative Works, and I continue to think that it's awesome. One of the things that boggles me about the internet is that people just take for granted that things disappear. You can read a story that's stunning, life-changing, brilliant, and then look it up one morning and find that it's completely gone.

here is me rambling on about the OTW, as if you haven't read enough about it already )

[Cross-posted to InsaneJournal]
I posted an entry the other day but LJ was being weird and wouldn't post so I had to backdate it in order to get it to go through. So then it didn't show up on anyone's FL apparently? (I don't really get the whole backdating thing). But it's here.

Whatever, it wasn't important, just squeeing more about Doctor Who. But the one important thing is: If you have Doctor/Master fic recs, please share. Because I am having a fanfic emergency. In the sense that I want to devour everything ever written in that pairing. Um, as long as it's written well, because I'm a snob.

I'll start with a rec of my own: over the past two days I absolutely devoured New Dawn Fades by [livejournal.com profile] omphalos. It was so good that I rushed home and read it until 2am last night. Frantically clicking "next" every time a chapter ended. And very nearly crying at several points throughout the story. And constantly finding myself surprised at how genuinely well-written and in character it was. I loved it. It's the kind of fic that goes to really dark places, but doesn't leave you feeling miserable. And the kind of fic that manages to make you happy without drowning you in icky unrealistic fluff. It was so good that I watched the end of "Last of the Time Lords" three times, because it felt like seeing the characters from the fic come to life.

(Also because I got a new monitor. It's 22 inches widescreen. It's so gorgeous I might just stop watching television and view everything on my computer now. And I got it super cheap on Black Friday!)

I also read all of [livejournal.com profile] versaphile's Ten/Master stories (well, except the one that went into mpreg territory--it's too big of a personal squick, sorry) and loved them. Oh, and I sent this series as a rec to [livejournal.com profile] jaydk, because I thought it was written well.

What else? Oh yeah, I need Doctor/Master icons. I'm looking but just in case anyone can point me to some nice shareable icons somewhere, that'd be great.

The Doctor/Master thing... well, I already posted raving about it. But continuing that train of thought, the other thing that really works for me about it is that I don't have to distort the characters OOC in order to buy into it. Spike and Xander (sorry!) always required a little suspension of disbelief. Even Spike and Angel, to be honest, although that one's a lot more canonical.

But Doctor/Master... I mean, my god. The Master commits mass genocide and the Doctor's response is to hug him, forgive him, and give up his life of adventure in order to take care of him? Not to mention all the "I love the way you say my name" and "are you asking me out on a date" and oh yeah, the Doctor referring to the Master's wife as his beard.

And then the Master dying in the Doctor's arms, and the Doctor holding him and sobbing! (Sobbing way more than he cried for Rose, btw.) And I know, last of his kind and all that, but still. It's a wonderful ship because there's so many potential interpretations. The Doctor's forgiveness can be interpreted as a kind of heroic transcendent Jesus-thing, or it could just be a really fucked-up co-dependent neediness thing. Or both. Same with the Master--sure, he does a good job of loathing and tormenting the Doctor, but he's also totally obsessed with the Doctor and the Doctor's reactions to what he does.

I don't know. It's the kind of thing that sets up a million different possibilities for a fic writer to explore. Also part of the fun for me is that I'm largely clueless about the canon of the show, and so I don't really have particularly set ideas of the characters in my head anyway. There's not much of a boundary between fandom and canon to me at this point, since it's all new to me right now.

(Speaking of fandom, [livejournal.com profile] jaydk and I were having fun reading one of the DW forums and laughing at the wank that's going on over various spoilers. However, it's definitely cemented my feeling that participating in fannish discussions tends to ruin my fun when it comes to whatever the fandom is actually about. I either get teeth-knashingly angry at the writers or at other fans. So I'm going to avoid actual Doctor Who fandom as much as possible, and just focus on the creative works that come out of it. And have fun.)

Oh, and then on... Monday?... I posted this angsty filtered whiny post (sorry) and [livejournal.com profile] jaydk saw it (oops) and decided to cheer me up by inviting me over to watch David Tennant DVDs from England on her new multi-region DVD player. CLEARLY I NEED TO POST ANGSTY THINGS MORE OFTEN. Because this was so much fun. We watched Learners, which I actually thought was awful, but David Tennant plays this adorable dorky driving instructor and was just super fun to watch.

And then we watched the first episode of Blackpool and OH MY GOD! First of all the show was amazing. Super well written and beautifully filmed and just gorgeous, with its own wonderful style, dark and funny and clever, and the acting and directing and everything was just excellent. And then. David Tennant. GORGEOUS. Like Doctor Who melded with Fox Mulder, minus the aliens. He plays a detective and he's all scruffy and smart and constantly eating (EEEE! ORAL FIXATION) and it's just adorable. OH and the most important part: at the end of the episode he sings! a duet! of "These Boots are Made for Walking"!!

Naturally, we have urgent plans to watch the rest of this series this weekend, since it was a Monday night and we only got through one episode. Don't spoil me. It was so good.

What else? I'm overwhelmed with stuff. I'm still re-reading "Queen's Play" and I started "Beat to Quarters" by C.S. Forester (good so far). I'm listening to PIG again and rediscovering how awesome it is and how well Raymond Watts' lyrics go with a nice dark Doctor/Master slash fic.

Oh, and I've been helping revamp the Chemlab site. Except it's not finished yet. But it's looking good, right? At least now the tour dates are up. I made the content management system and its structural stuff; others made the banner and color scheme; and various people have been doing the actual data input. The Hydrogen Bar.

Which reminds me of another thing I forgot to mention: CHEMLAB IS ON TOUR. They are wonderful and you should go see them. Definitely. Chemlab tour dates.

I have too much stuff in my head right now. Oh, and I've been trying to keep up with LJ, but not doing well with it. I love you guys and I'm trying to comment more often....

Tonight I'm going to see My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult. I bought the tickets a while ago. I wish I knew exactly when they're going on so that I don't have to wait in some dank club half the night. I'm so tired today; I really just want to go home and sleep. Or, um, read Ten/Master fic on my gigantic new LCD monitor. *sigh*
