May. 14th, 2003 10:47 pmDude, David Fury just practically spewed out the BAPS mission statement on the Succubus Club! I'm in heaven. :) Gotta get a transcript of this and post it on my site...
ETA: No, he didn't actually mention BAPS, but he basically paraphrased the ideas that BAPS has always been promoting. He said that he's changed his position on Spike, that Spike is "special"; Spike always had that extra bit of humanity left in him that other vampires (for example, Angelus) don't have. Spike's "sentimental" and that the William part has always been in him, that's why he loved Dru and why the Judge said that he reeked of humanity. The chip and his love for Buffy brought his humanity out even more. Also, Fury definitely said that Spike loved Buffy, that he loved Dawn, and that he was crushed by Joyce's death.
Oh, and he mocked that Salon.com article by insisting that this has always been an integral part of Spike's character, and that Spike was a necessary part of Buffy's journey.
And he said that Spike would have been the male lead in the Faith spin-off (dammit! I wanted that!) or the male lead in any other spin-off. And that JM was not in any way responsible for other cast members leaving AtS, but that he was *integral* to the renewal of AtS.
Other good news: Drew Goddard and Steve DeKnight will be writing for AtS next year (two of my favorite BtVS writers!). Lilah will probably return, and the guy who played Holden may also return.

Date: 2003-05-14 09:39 pm (UTC)But yes, it was the really real Fury. He actually came across as somewhat ... likeable? Brutally honest and rather tactless, but it's nice when he's on our side and dissing the Spike detractors.

Date: 2003-05-14 09:49 pm (UTC)I'm kind of sorry he may not be writing for AtS, because despite his Wrong-Headed Views, I've always liked the harder edge he gives Spike in his episodes. I mean, it was "Crush" that turned me into a B/S shipper, little though I realized it at the time.
But total SQUEEE! on DeKnight and DrewGod.

Date: 2003-05-14 09:59 pm (UTC)I'm so glad about Drew Goddard; he was one of the best things to happen to BtVS this year.
Drew Goddard was also the recurring topic of the night; everyone kept praising him, and I think Minear and Fury started to get a little jealous. One of the hosts accidentally referred to Minear as "Drew Goddard." Then later, when they were talking about whether vampires can love, one of the hosts said "Well, as Dru said in 'Crush,' we can love quite well, if not wisely" and Fury got all outraged because he thought she was crediting "Crush" to Drew Goddard. She had to clarify that she meant DruSILLA, not Drew Goddard.

BAPS formed after "Fool for Love" because fans who liked Spike and wanted to see him redeemed were getting mocked and harrassed on the newsgroup. (Of course, Fury calling Spike fans "serial killer lovers" didn't help). BAPS was a safe haven where the first redemptionists could discuss Spike's journey without being questioned at every turn. Now it's huge, and there's a lot of disagreement over whether it's a cool place to be anymore. (Personally I still like it a lot).

Date: 2003-05-14 10:47 pm (UTC)And, I love how The WB puts a special emphasis on one aspect of the upcoming 2003/2004 season: "Well, Angel reunites with Wesley, Fred, Lorne, Gunn (and SPIKE!)". Hee ... and SPIKE! is right ;-)
Thanks for this and the links, Laura ;-)
question about spinoffs
Date: 2003-05-14 10:53 pm (UTC)So Spike could still be the lead in any Spike, er, BtVS spinoff? StV say?
I just winced at the phrasing "Spike would have been the male lead in any spinoff" - like now that wasn't ever going to happen. Please tell me I misunderstood (whimper)
in the meantime very delighted that StS will be debuting next September :)
Re: question about spinoffs
Date: 2003-05-14 10:59 pm (UTC)I suspect that a spin-off isn't entirely ruled out; they'll have to wait and see what happens with AtS. Maybe if Spike's popular there, they'll use it to spawn a Spike spin-off.
What really saddened me, though, was that Fury said the Faith show was greenlighted. He, Joss, and Minear were going to work on it, and had the premise all planned out, with JM as male lead. I'm so disappointed that's not going to happen; if only Eliza Dushka had signed...
