Dude, David Fury just practically spewed out the BAPS mission statement on the Succubus Club! I'm in heaven. :) Gotta get a transcript of this and post it on my site...

ETA: No, he didn't actually mention BAPS, but he basically paraphrased the ideas that BAPS has always been promoting. He said that he's changed his position on Spike, that Spike is "special"; Spike always had that extra bit of humanity left in him that other vampires (for example, Angelus) don't have. Spike's "sentimental" and that the William part has always been in him, that's why he loved Dru and why the Judge said that he reeked of humanity. The chip and his love for Buffy brought his humanity out even more. Also, Fury definitely said that Spike loved Buffy, that he loved Dawn, and that he was crushed by Joyce's death.

Oh, and he mocked that Salon.com article by insisting that this has always been an integral part of Spike's character, and that Spike was a necessary part of Buffy's journey.

And he said that Spike would have been the male lead in the Faith spin-off (dammit! I wanted that!) or the male lead in any other spin-off. And that JM was not in any way responsible for other cast members leaving AtS, but that he was *integral* to the renewal of AtS.

Other good news: Drew Goddard and Steve DeKnight will be writing for AtS next year (two of my favorite BtVS writers!). Lilah will probably return, and the guy who played Holden may also return.

I'm in happy land...

He didn't mention BAPS but he was very pro-Spike's redemption/the idea that Spike's always had more humanity in him than other vampires, etc. I edited my post to add more explanation.

Okay. Spike's on AtS. Connor's gone. Fury's come around in his views. Clay's in the Idol finals. The hangup in my correspondence work was suddenly cleared up and the transcripts got to the registrar in plenty of time for graduation. Profs have cancelled three upcoming tests. My car's running better than it ever has. The big medical problem with my cat turned out to... not be there. SPIKE'S ON ATS AND CONNOR IS GONE.

I'm going to wake up tomorrow, it's going to be February, everything's going to suck, and I'll be very put out.

I'm feeling the same way! I keep thinking this is too good to be true. I had a serious moment of "am I dreaming?" disbelief when I saw Spike on the AtS poster yesterday.

Yup, on the WB website. Here it is in PDF format.

And here's the page that links to it and talks about the renewal. Complete with a photo of Spike along with the rest of the cast. :)

Seriously, he could have been reading off of the BAPS website ... or any of the good redemption essays that have been posted in the past few years. There was on requisite "sometimes Spike's love was sick" comment, but otherwise he really seems to have reversed himself. (He said something like "I know I've been very vocal about it in the past, but I had to find a way to fit it into my worldview" ... I hope someone has transcribed it. :)

I just re-read my post, and I can't believe I started a sentence with the word "Dude." Um, I was excited.

But yes, it was the really real Fury. He actually came across as somewhat ... likeable? Brutally honest and rather tactless, but it's nice when he's on our side and dissing the Spike detractors.

Has someone felt his forehead? See if he's got a fever?

I'm kind of sorry he may not be writing for AtS, because despite his Wrong-Headed Views, I've always liked the harder edge he gives Spike in his episodes. I mean, it was "Crush" that turned me into a B/S shipper, little though I realized it at the time.

But total SQUEEE! on DeKnight and DrewGod.

Well, we'll still have DeKnight for the darker edge; he balances it really well. Also they said that Spike will probably be Angel's foil, so there's definitely room for edge there. But I'll be very happy if Fury stays; from what he said he seems to be on board with the Spike fans now. :)

I'm so glad about Drew Goddard; he was one of the best things to happen to BtVS this year.

Drew Goddard was also the recurring topic of the night; everyone kept praising him, and I think Minear and Fury started to get a little jealous. One of the hosts accidentally referred to Minear as "Drew Goddard." Then later, when they were talking about whether vampires can love, one of the hosts said "Well, as Dru said in 'Crush,' we can love quite well, if not wisely" and Fury got all outraged because he thought she was crediting "Crush" to Drew Goddard. She had to clarify that she meant DruSILLA, not Drew Goddard.

God, this is unbelievable. I've been giddy since monday, and now this ?! OK, Fury, I take back almost all the nasty things I've said about you in the past. Fury has become a redemptionista ? I'm gloating. And I'm delighted for James Marsters. They said in the interview that they first wanted to bring him in as a recurring character, but that the network insisted on signing him as a regular, which is what clinched the deal for AtS's renewal. This is so great ! I don't even know James Marsters, but I'm so happy to know that he gets some of the recognition that he deserves. I was actually worried about his professional future. I'm doing a happy dance !

Er, er, er. Can I be um, kind of obnoxious and ask what BAPS is? Besides a weird movie, cause I kind of doubt that's what David Fury is talking about here. :)

But it does sound spiffy! hee

The actual BAPS group is at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bloody_awful/

Their website (with essays, mission statement, etc) is at:
http://www.bloodyawfulpoet.com

BAPS formed after "Fool for Love" because fans who liked Spike and wanted to see him redeemed were getting mocked and harrassed on the newsgroup. (Of course, Fury calling Spike fans "serial killer lovers" didn't help). BAPS was a safe haven where the first redemptionists could discuss Spike's journey without being questioned at every turn. Now it's huge, and there's a lot of disagreement over whether it's a cool place to be anymore. (Personally I still like it a lot).

BAPS is the Bloody Awful Poet Society, a Spike redemptionist Yahoo Group. I'd link you to their site, but BAPS is notoriously spoiler-ridden and I don't want to risk it.

Thanks for the news on the Fury turnaround, Laura. I started giggling uncontrollably as soon as I read it--wild Bohemian dancing soon to follow! And yay to Ultimate Drew joining AtS--he was a great find for ME. Squeee!

Whoa. Not only am I in awe that Fury has done an about-face on Spike, but I think it's marvelous that he was big enough to come out and say he'd reversed his previous thinking. That takes a lot of guts, really. A small part of me is also kind of gleeful that he's now taking on the Spike detractors when he'd always previously seemed to really not like the Spike fans.

Wow ... I'm just amazed that the writers have come around to this view of Spike and his journey. I really, really hope they do a commentary on this for the S7 DVD.

And, I love how The WB puts a special emphasis on one aspect of the upcoming 2003/2004 season: "Well, Angel reunites with Wesley, Fred, Lorne, Gunn (and SPIKE!)". Hee ... and SPIKE! is right ;-)

Thanks for this and the links, Laura ;-)

question about spinoffs

From: [identity profile] klytaimnestra.livejournal.com
I thought they were still thinking about spinoffs, they just aren't going to happen in September?

So Spike could still be the lead in any Spike, er, BtVS spinoff? StV say?

I just winced at the phrasing "Spike would have been the male lead in any spinoff" - like now that wasn't ever going to happen. Please tell me I misunderstood (whimper)

in the meantime very delighted that StS will be debuting next September :)

Re: question about spinoffs

Date: 2003-05-14 10:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rusty_halo.livejournal.com
It didn't sound like a spin-off is in the works. They're all moving on to other projects or else focusing on AtS right now.

I suspect that a spin-off isn't entirely ruled out; they'll have to wait and see what happens with AtS. Maybe if Spike's popular there, they'll use it to spawn a Spike spin-off.

What really saddened me, though, was that Fury said the Faith show was greenlighted. He, Joss, and Minear were going to work on it, and had the premise all planned out, with JM as male lead. I'm so disappointed that's not going to happen; if only Eliza Dushka had signed...

and why on earth DIDN'T she sign? The pilot she's doing sounds totally lame, and it won't be working with Joss, either. I suspect that all of them are going to look back on their time with Joss as the best work they ever were given the opportunity to do. What was she thinking? So sad taht we won't have it now!
