Took the "LiveJournal Slut" quiz. Apparently I'm not much of a LJ slut; I've only met 13.9% of the people on my friends list, and I've hugged 8.1%. That's it. (Oh, and I've seen .6% of them topless, which is one person, and was not in a sexy way.)
Also, did the Harry Potter OoTP meme. Spoilers, obviously.
1. Describe in five words or less how you feel about Order of the Phoenix. (your initial reaction)
Dark, complex, interesting, disappointing, letdown.
2. What are your feelings on Harry's personality? Do you think he is overly cynical, depressed, etc...?
I like that he's getting depressed and cynical; it's about time, given all that he's been through. I hope, though, that he really tries not to wallow in self-pity and not to take his pain out on other people (which are the qualities that made me lose sympathy for Buffy in a similar situation in BtVS season six).
I'm glad that Rowling is writing him as a real teenager and not as a naive ten-year-old forever. Character growth = good.
3. Do you think Order of the Phoenix is appropriate for children 13 and younger? Why or why not?
Absolutely. Because children need to be exposed to the complexities of life and taught about them, otherwise they'll be incapable of dealing with them as adults. I do hope that parents will be there to discuss the more mature themes with their kids, though.
4. List your five most hated characters (either in Book 5 or the whole series, non-humans can be included).
1. Umbridge. Because she could literally be my high school principal, well except for the whole physical torture thing.
2. Fudge. Because he's a power-hungry coward, willing to risk the fate of the whole society for his own convenience.
3. Wormtail. Again with the coward thing. He sold out his friends, who trusted him, which is one of the worst crimes I can think of.
4. Voldemort. 'Cause, y'know, pure evil, and all that. And he killed Cedric, and Harry's parents, and tortured Harry.
5. Bellatrix Lestrange. Because she killed Sirius! (*sniffle*)
5. Percy turned away from his family. Will he come crawling back to them now or . . .?
I doubt it. He's too proud and self-righteous for that. I hope at some point he'll be reunited with them though; you know he really does love them deep down.
6. What did you think of the new DADA's punishment?
So creepy.
7. What do you think of James and Lily now?
I'm glad they were given more complexity. Lily is a lot more admirable now; it's really hard to stand up to your peers like that. I like that James wasn't as perfect as Harry thought, though I don't think it's a horrific tarnish on his character. Everyone does stupid shit when they're 15.
8. Has your opinion (which is probably not too good) of Petunia Dursley changed? If yes, how so?
She's more complex, which is nice, and we see that she really does have a bit of a heart and a bit of loyalty somewhere in there. I'd like to see this explored more in future books; she's more interesting as a character than as a caricature.
9. What's the meaning of Snape's nickname in your opinion?
Well, it's a derisive play on his first name, right?
10. What do you think of the character death? Do you think s/he will return?
Won't return, as much as I want him to, because that would cheapen the whole impact. (Like why they never let Tara return on BtVS). This makes me sad, because he was my favorite character, and I'd love to see him back. (And there's no body! So he could come back, right?)
11. Do you think fanfiction will be hurt by Book 5? Do you see any new pairings arising? Do you see any huge ships falling apart?
I don't read Harry Potter fic. But I can only imagine that this will simply provide more fodder for fic writers' imaginations. I'd probably read Sirius Black/Remus Lupin fic, if I were to read HP....
12. What was your favourite chapter in Order of the Phoenix? Why?
Er, the one where Fred and George leave school. That kicked so much ass. I also really liked the one where Dumbledore cries a bit at the end; that's a great image.
13. Talk about Fred and George's "flight."
Like I said: that kicked so much ass. Best part of the book. God, I wish someone had done something like that in my high school. They totally showed her, and they had their futures all set so they didn't need her anyway. Just perfect.
14. Give some thoughts on Ron.
I don't really have many thoughts on Ron. He was there, he did the sidekick thing ... that's about it. His temper wasn't as bad here as in previous books; maybe he's mellowing as Harry darkens. Nice to see him start to get over his insecurity by playing Quidditch.
15. What did you think of Dumbledore's explanation?
Well, duh. Not great; I was hoping for something a lot less predictable. His tear at the end was good, though.
16. Do you feel satisfied by this book?
Not as much as I'd hoped. It was dark (good) but kinda dull (bad). Not nearly as intense as I'd hoped; there was no scene to equal the incredibly cool and intense Harry/Voldemort confrontation at the end of the previous book.
17. How anxious are you now for Book 6?
On a scale of one to ten ... maybe three or four? Not really all that anxious to be honest. I hope it's got more really emotionally engaging action and more surprises than this one.
