Uranium 235 last night. Wow. Memories.

It's hard to describe what this show meant to me. I'm trying to fit it into Buffy fandom context. Okay. Imagine if, instead of being on once a week, Buffy was only on about once a month. And it was live, instead of on TV, and you had to travel to go see it. You started going by yourself, or with some friends, but you ended up meeting other fans there and developing relationships with them. So you'd all travel from all over, New Jersey and Long Island and Connecticut and Boston and DC and NYC, and the only times you'd get to all hang out together was at these shows. (The rest of the time you'd communicate online, but that's just not the same.)

So you do this for two years, and then the show gets cancelled (aka, the band breaks up). And suddenly you don't have any excuse for all your friends to travel insane distances to hang out together anymore. So you don't see most of them for 2 1/2 years, and then...

The band plays a reunion show! (Sorry, I don't know how to translate that into Buffy-think). So you see all your old friends (and acquaintances) again after almost three years!

It was kinda like a high school reunion. Chrissy got blond and tanned, and she barely even wears black anymore. And Steff's hair is so long! And Lisa chopped her hair OFF! And I'm blond too (Matt didn't even recognize me at first)! And almost none of us are in high school anymore, and some of us have real jobs. And a bunch of us are in college. Everyone looks older and kinda different, but the same too. And no matter how different they look, their voices are the same.

It was so cool to see them all again, and hang out chatting, and then go inside and see the band, and dance to these songs that we all know by heart. And to see the band members too (well, Shane and Matt are the only ones left). There's something about music that strikes such an emotional chord; hearing those songs was like being transported back in time.

And it was so cool to reminisce about all these shared memories. Like, remember the time we went to North Philly, and we were wearing these insane outfits (I had on black vinyl minishorts and a black vinyl corset) and we had to walk down this really creepy highway to get to the club, and we thought we were going to get killed? Remember the time nobody got into the Batcave show, 'cause they were checking IDs, and then Chrissy got so drunk she grabbed onto Shane's leg and wouldn't let go? And running the merch booth, and before that selling t-shirts in line, and following them to DC (where they played 1 1/2 songs before the sound screwed up!) and Philly. And getting so dressed up for shows, and gossiping about people we didn't like, and sleeping in Penn Station because we missed the last train and had to wait for the 4:30am one. Those were such good times.

The band played well, too, though you'd think after ... how many years? ... that they could come up with some new songs. And of course, it wouldn't be a Uranium show without technical glitches, but they only had to restart one song. They went on more than two hours late, but again, Uranium show, so it's expected. (Although I truly wish they'd done it on a weekend; staying out till 2am and going to work the next day is so not cool). I wish they'd played the original version of "Creator" instead of the remix (the remix is probably good for clubs and dancing, 'cause it's kinda dreamy, but the original is better for a show where your attention is on the band, because it's much more focused and builds up the energy better). It was really cool that Matt sang lead for the last song; that was new, and he did well. And it was cool to hear "Walk On Though," but I'd really love to hear "Bleed My Disease" (which is where the "drink the poison" in my screen name comes from).

I feel totally dead today. I was standing in high heels from 9pm - 2am, so I'm exhausted and my back is killing me. My throat is also aching from all the smoke (no smoking in the club, but we spent most of the time outside). That's one thing I don't miss about Uranium shows. But overall: really cool experience, so good to see everyone again.
