Categorizing Fic
Jan. 5th, 2004 11:35 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
So, as it turns out, classifying almost 1,000 stories into 30 potential categories is really, really difficult. Because even though every story won't be in every category (or even in any category), you still have to look at every story, remember what it's about, and go through the list of categories to see which, if any, it fits.
And while some of the categories are fairly cut-and-dry ("Post-Apocalypse," for example), others are pretty ambiguous. How do you decide what goes into the category "Angst"? Most stories have a bit of angst. Is it, what, 90% angst and then it goes into the angst category? The overwhelming mood of the piece is angsty? You can't really quantify something like that. And I don't have much time to re-read stories that I archived a year and a half ago to see if the overwhelming mood is angsty, or whether or not they contain, say, bloodplay (which someone suggested as a category) or hurt/comfort or whatever.
So, this is going to take awhile. But hey, at least I got the programming part done. And many thanks to everyone who offered suggestions.
Now (I feel very guilty for asking this), a couple of times in the past, people have volunteered to help out with my site. I've always said no thanks because, well, mostly because I'm a control freak and it's easier for me to do things myself rather than panic over how someone else might be doing it incorrectly. But this is something that people could actually help out with, especially if you're an author who has stories on my site. You know your work better than I do; if you have time, why not take a look at the list of categories and let me know which, if any, each of your stories might fit into. And if you're a reader who is familiar with the fiction on my site, let me know which stories you think would fit well into one or more of these categories. (And anyone is free to suggest more categories or changes in the current categories. I found as I went through the stories that new possibilities for categorization kept popping up.)
I would be grateful to anyone who helps out, and certainly won't hold it against anyone who doesn't have the time. You can comment here or email me.
I will continue sorting through them myself; I just figured this might be a way to speed the process a bit.

(Pairings are already covered in Fiction by Pairing, time periods are already covered in Fiction by Episode, ratings are already covered in Fiction by Rating, and length is already covered in Fiction by Length.)
It's also quite possible that some stories don't fit into any of these categories, which is fine. Not every story will be categorized here.
If you're wondering what the hell I'm talking about--it started here.
I totally understand that this is a ridiculous request; I figured I may as well ask just in case anyone feels like helping. :)
ETA: Each story can be in up to five categories, but most will just be in one or two. It's fine for a story to not be in any of these categories. The categories added since I first posted are Romance, Character Study, False Memories, Time/Universe Displacement, Missing Scene, Drabble, Friendship, Episode Coda, Action/Adventure, and Quest.

Could you clarify what the Soulless Redemption category is, please? Does it mean stories in which Spike actually becomes redeemed while soulless, or does it mean stories in which it's suggested Spike could be redeemed while soulless? If it's the latter, I think "Rise" might fit.
(no subject)
Date: 2004-01-05 05:19 pm (UTC)It can be actual redemption or potential redemption, as long as it's a significant theme in the story. :)

Perish: Ooh! Ooh! Soulless Redemption? Maybe? Or else, I don't know. Romance, if we need a category, possibly. Or just Miscellany.
And also, someone asked to link to "Incandescence," which I think only exists on my LJ right now. It's Will/Angelus at the opera, with nasty behaviour in an alley afterward. Would you be interested in archiving it at AAS if I cleaned it up? I'd rather they linked to it at your site, which is proper, than at my LJ, which is lame. I can send you a copy for your perusal before you yay or nay. And thanks.

(no subject)
Date: 2004-01-05 07:08 pm (UTC)Hmm, that's interesting. It's sort of related to memory loss, since memory loss often assumes memories that didn't happen. But it's not exactly the same thing. I'll add that; I can think of a couple of S4 Spike/Dawn friendship fics that would fit.
If you have the opportunity to help categorize, please do. Just pick a category or an author or a letter or whatever and sort through. (No need to worry about any of the authors who have replied here, though.)
Thanks! :)

I'm hesitant to put them under humor or angst, because while they have humor and angst in them, they're not really about humor or angst. And while NE takes place in the weeks leading up to Christmas, it's not really a major part of the story.
I don't suppose there could be a plot-heavy swashbuckling adventure category? I get really burnt out of stories that are All About The Pairing after awhile.

Date: 2004-01-05 09:02 pm (UTC)Not everything has to fit into one of these categories. All stories are already categorized by time period, pairing (or "no pairing"), length, and rating (or "not rated"). This is just for categories that aren't already covered by one of those.
Like, for example, around the holidays you always find people asking "Where can I find Christmas fics?" or "Where can I find Halloween fics?" and so on. And there's always people looking for stuff like post-apocalypse fic, or hurt/comfort fic, or whatever. Right now those kinds of things are very difficult to find on my site; they're not categorized in any way.
So I figured I'd add a way to make it easier for people to find such stories. It doesn't mean that every story has to be in one of these categories. If you feel that some of your stories don't fit into any of them, that's fine.
I'd prefer not to make a friendship category, since that's more-or-less covered in the pairings section. I did just add Character Study, though; do you think that fits any of them?
Oh, and each story can be in up to five categories, so if you think one of them should be in more than one, that's fine too.
Thanks! :)

I'm not sure about "Common Ground" and "Steps" - possibly angst? I'm afraid I use that when I'm not sure what other category it would fall into, and I don't want to dilute the meaning of the category. They are friendship fics, and that's already covered by your pairings, so I guess I'll leave that up to you.
Thanks for doing this, Laura - your site keeps getting better and better.

Date: 2004-01-05 08:41 pm (UTC)Crossover is just going to be a crossover between the Jossverse (Buffy and Angel, not Firefly) and another series. (Right now the only one in there is Mezz's "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy: Spike," but if I archive Lesley's AtS/Alias crossover it would fit, too.)
I mean, I think everything on my site is a crossover between BtVS and AtS, since Spike and his history have been explored on both shows. So this is just crossovers between BtVS/AtS and other shows.

Date: 2004-01-07 06:40 am (UTC)Apologies for the mistake on Always. I'll fix it.
Thanks for suggesting the categories. I wasn't going to add "Drabble" because it's easy to find under "Fiction by Length," but I suppose for organizational purposes it could come in handy.
I also wasn't going to add friendship, since you can look for friendship under pairings (Spike & [whatever character]). But it's true that category could come in handy if you want stories where the idea of friendship is a major theme.
And missing scene--that's a good one.
Not everything has to be categorized, so I'm wary of adding unnecessary categories which will just increase the workload. But I can see how these are useful.
I'm also not planning to list these categories with the story descriptions. I worry about the homogenization and over-simplification that comes with such categorization. I'd prefer to let authors describe their story in the summary if they prefer. So these will just be used when people are specifically searching for something in one of the categories.
Thanks. :)
