I'm tired and distracted today.
New Years Eve was great. I woke up around noon and curled up reading "A Storm of Swords."
drujan called around 3pm--she'd just gotten off work and wanted to have a drink, then go home and go to bed early. So I got all dressed up (I wore my new KMFDM babydoll t-shirt, which fits just as nicely as my favorite Common Rotation shirt!) and met her at the Heartland Brewery at Union Square.
We shared a beer sampler and caught up, but the waitress informed me shortly that there was no vegan food on their menu.
drujan wanted to keep drinking, though, and I didn't want to drink any more without eating, so we headed over to Kate's so I could have dinner. (I had to bribe
drujan into going with a promise that I would see "Phantom of the Opera" with her at some point.)
Kate's was great--vegan buffalo wings and a great Thanksgiving-type dinner with yams, mashed potates, garlic-sauteed greens, and barbecue tofu, tempeh, and seitan. I got very full. We also continued drinking--I had a vegan white russian and a "something fruity with rum." Hey, it was New Years Eve.
Then, since it was already after 9pm, I talked
drujan into coming with me to the Goth club I wanted to attend--it was nearby and opened at 10, and was only $15 with passes. So first we headed over to this coffee shop on 2nd Ave at 5th St (where a group of us once went with
nautibitz and friends) and drank espresso to keep us awake.
Then we headed over to the club, which was at Remote Lounge. This place is very cool--there are TV screens EVERYWHERE and hidden cameras throughout the club. There are also little consoles everywhere--you can change channels and move the cameras around to find yourself on the screens! We had a lot of fun with that. I also had four beers throughout the night--damn I spent a lot of money!
There were two floors--goth/industrial/80s downstairs, and sort of 80s alternative/punk upstairs. We spent a while upstairs, drinking, until midnight, when we watched the ball drop and made wishes (they gave out free champagne and threw confetti). Then we headed downstairs because I wanted to hear the Goth music.
drujan loved it--she'd never been to a Goth club, but I think she knew more songs than I did! Apparently that music is a lot more popular in Europe.
I have to go to clubs more often.
Anyway, so we stayed down there drinking and talking until around 2:30am, then headed home. So we spent about four hours there total.
drujan walked back to my place and I gave her her holiday present, which
jaydk and I pooled our money to get her. It was...
...
...a GIANT TALKING CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW DOLL.
drujan loved it (I figured she'd either love or hate it), so yay! That turned out well, and she thanked me for dragging her out and not letting her go home and sleep.
Probably the only problem was that the espresso kept me up. I finally gave up on sleeping and stayed awake reading "A Storm of Swords" until I finally passed out around 8am.
My old high school friend Mike came to visit me on Monday night. It was last-minute, so we just hung out at my place, talking and drinking and watching old home videos of us in high school. (There's this one that just kills me every time I watch it. It's a civil war re-enactment that we made for history class. Basically, several of my friends, wearing vaguely blue and grey colored clothing, beat the crap out of each other with supersoakers and hockey sticks. Then we show several minutes of Mike getting his arm amputated, shrieking in agony and having wine poured down his throat. Somehow we got an A on the project.)
Then we watched Harry Potter 3, but didn't get a chance to finish it because he had to catch a train back to NJ at 1:40am. (I think we really annoyed my new roommate by watching the movie... oh well. I haven't seen Mike in nearly a year.) We made plans to hang out again (and finish the movie!)
It was great to see him. I can't believe that this year is the fifth anniversary of our high school graduation. ((OH MY GOD WE'RE OLD!)) I wonder if there's going to be any reunion-type stuff... or if I would go even if there was.
It's weird, because one thing I really miss is being able to talk to people with such a similar cultural and personal background. That is something that I always took for granted in the past, but now that it's gone, I feel the difference. With Mike, we can reminisce about all this stuff ... teachers, kids from school, concerts we went to, albums we liked ... that I can't really talk about with anyone else that I'm still in touch with. I've known him much longer than anyone else that I still know (we were in the same fifth grade class!). With friends now, I have to explain these basic differences and cultural references that Mike just automatically gets.
We also like a lot of the same music--he's probably the only person with whom I could discuss the best KMFDM album or the favorite song on WWIII. Not that we always agree, but we have a similar enough background to have an educated discussion.
Anyway. Mike's a good guy, and it was wonderful to see him. Hopefully we will stay in touch better in the future. (I'm so bad at keeping in touch.... I suck.)
