Oh yeah, fannish preferences totally reflect our values/ideas/etc. (Though we have to be careful and not make assumptions about other people based on their fannish preferences, because they may like/dislike things for reasons other than our own. [Of course you already know that, I'm just saying it to qualify.])
Fandom is a language. Definitely. I'm fascinated by that idea, actually. Like people on the outside go "How the hell can you spend THIS MUCH TIME talking about vampires?" but really it's so much more. It's a pathway, a common language and experience, for all of us people of such different backgrounds to gather together and have these amazing discussions about EVERYTHING, politics, gender, psychology, philosophy, sex, love, life, everything.
