I met George R. R. Martin!

Guess who just met George R. R. Martin.
That would be... me!
(Squee!!)
I went to Book Expo America, which is this insanely HUGE book conference. (I got in free because I work at a publisher and we have a booth there.) This place is insane--there's books EVERYWHERE, and massive amounts of free stuff, and authors signing, and you can just walk up and they'll give you a book and sign it for you, totally free. It's AWESOME.
So I wandered around in a daze for a while (and got a couple of Harlequin romances signed, because I just couldn't get over how cool it was that you could do that). I also got lost like four times, as I had no clue where to go, but finally I found my way into the George R. R. Martin autograph line. I only had to wait about 20 minutes, then I was up front, meeting him!
So, he signed the book for me (they gave you an excerpt of "A Feast for Crows," a Dany chapter, though I assume now it'll actually end up in "A Dance for Dragons," collectible, woo!). He personalized, even. "Laura, enjoy the feast! George R. R. Martin." Then gave it back to me, and being a dork I blurted, "I'm like the hugest Jaime Lannister fan ever." He and the two people with him both laughed at me, and he said "Don't worry, there's lots of Jaime in the new book." I said "Awesome" or something stupid like that, and he said "But there's lots of Cersei, too." To which I responded "That's okay, as long as there's Jaime" and he laughed at me again. Then I left. (He pronounces it "Sir-Say," btw, not "Sir-See.")
So, that was neat. :)

Date: 2005-06-03 02:01 pm (UTC)So, my fun day was at Jo-Ann Fabrics trying to find material for skirts for the cruise, so Shauny can make me acceptable clothing. Surrounded by icky, fat or old crafters.
Then Garth called, and USAir fucked up his flight, and instead of being able to get in at 2:45p, he gets in at 10:45p, so I went to Target to find tops, which I hated, because they all suck and I'm bloated and puffy, and there was gross people there.
So, yeah, your day was totally more funner than mine, you lucky duck.

Did you finish "A Storm of Swords"? I'm assuming you must've. Get in touch, tell me your thoughts! We should schedule a phone call, maybe this weekend?
What dates are you going to be gone on the cruise, btw? We should start figuring out some plans and stuff... :)

Date: 2005-06-03 03:00 pm (UTC)That does suck, because I'd have totally helped you move stuff.
I did finish the book the night before I sent the wank!ticle. I wonder if the preview chapter was given since it *is* a Cersei chapter and she's a new voice? Wish it had been a Jaime, though!
Do you have free minutes on weekends? I leave next Wednesday (8th), but I'll just be in FL until we leave Saturday morning. We get back to shore the 18th, and I also fly home then. Unsure about phones, but I do know they have internet, so Yay! on that.

Date: 2005-06-03 03:41 pm (UTC)My mom came up and helped me move stuff. Which was nice. Except she's the one who broke the desk. :(
There are a couple of Jaime chapters from AFFC floating around on the web. If you go to the ASOIAF ezboard, you'll find them.
Yup, free minutes on weekends. Maybe you could call Saturday afternoon?
Glad they have internet! I can't imagine being stranded on that cruise with Vulkon and your mom and a bunch of old people and stalkers and NO INTERNET OMG...!! ;)
