Date: 2005-06-09 08:09 am (UTC)Traveling. Seeing the world, meeting new people, experiencing new stuff, etc.
Would you do Buffy in with a weapon or your bare hands?
Well, I might need a weapon to subdue her, on account of her slayer strength and all. But once she was down, it would be really fun to strangle her with my bare hands. :)
Wanna make out? :)
Um... not at the moment?

Hee! Yeah, okay, I was running out of questions at that point.
And yeah, travel is near the top of my favorite things, too. I'm hoping that once I start accumulating vacation with the new job, I will able to do more.

Do you have any new fandoms?
What's the craziest thing you have ever done in the name of fandom?

Date: 2005-06-09 08:24 am (UTC)It's from the KMFDM song "Flesh," which I've loved for years. Raymond Watts (the lovely man in my icon) wrote it. I like the idea of something once pure, now tainted, I guess. Or of innocence/faith abandoned. Perhaps related to the fact that the disillusioned idealist is my bullet-proof character archetype. (If I'd known people were going to refer to me as "Rusty" perhaps I'd have thought differently.)
Has the bitterness over season 7 abated with time?
Well, I don't think about it very often, so in that respect, yes. But when I DO think about it, I'm just as vehemently repulsed as ever.
Do you have any new fandoms?
I have things that I'm interested in, but I'm not actually participating or adding anything to the fandom. Lately I've been (relatively passively) into Alice in Chains, Raymond Watts/PIG, Rescue Me, Highlander (Methos), Harry Potter (Remus/Sirius), Queer as Folk (Brian Kinney), Veronica Mars (Logan), Star Wars (always), and George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series. Um, to name a few.
What's the craziest thing you have ever done in the name of fandom?
I paid $600 that I really couldn't afford for a ticket to last year's Halloween convention in London. And then I got up onstage in front of 800 people, wearing red striped tights and a shirt with a tear in it, and sat there for an hour with four other people, one of whom was Jane Espenson. And I conversed with her about Spike's sex appeal.
It really would be impossible to top that in terms of achievement or insanity, so that was my final Buffy convention.

3. Say you've been Mary Sued into the Star Wars universe. Who are your new friends, dark or light side, what planet do you live on?
4. Best Alice in Chains album.
5. How do you feel about the movies of Tim Burton?

Okay, so only one is physically IN NYC...
2. What did you like least about Spike (and you can't say Buffy)?
The fact that he would always cave and accept Buffy's (and others') evaluations of him instead of standing up for himself. He'd pretend to, put on a good show about not caring what other people thought, but deep down he didn't have the self-confidence, which is why he always let Buffy walk all over him, never managed to actually leave her despite several attempts, and caved to getting a soul. (And then once he got the soul that was it, he didn't even pretend to have a backbone anymore.)
3. Say you've been Mary Sued into the Star Wars universe. Who are your new friends, dark or light side, what planet do you live on?
Wow, hmmm. I think teenage me and RotS Anakin would've gotten along *great*. We could've converted to the dark side together, or better yet, rejected existing orthodoxies and formed our own Force-using order that synthesized the best aspects of Jedi and Sith. And on Coruscant, totally, because it's a gigantic city, and I love the city; I'd be quite happy never to leave.
4. Best Alice in Chains album.
Dirt. Is it even a question?
5. How do you feel about the movies of Tim Burton?
I love Edward Scissorhands. I liked that Sleepy Hollow one too. What else has he done? I didn't like his Batman...

Date: 2005-06-13 07:42 am (UTC)2. I remember loving Spike in the earlier seasons, even in season five when he was stalking Buffy. I don't even want to talk about the soul thing.
3. I would have turned to the dark side, too. That whole strict, void of emotion Jedi way would have drove me nuts. And Sith equals cool lightning! Coruscant was beautiful, like a futuristic Manhattan.
4. Hee. Dirt is a classic.
5. He's done Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, Big Fish, Mars Attack, Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Batman does nothing for me either.

Date: 2005-06-16 08:21 pm (UTC)I loved Spike best in season five. *sigh* After that, well, it was definitely over by "Smashed," when Marti Noxon's ridiculous agenda completely distorted the character they'd been building so beautifully since mid-S5. I pitied him after that, but couldn't respect or admire him....
Yeah, the dark side is way cooler. Y'know, minus the genocide. Can't people be passionate and badass and not, y'know, mass murderers?
I'm intrigued by the way Star Wars uses blue/green/calm/dispassionate to represent good, and red/passion to represent bad. It's the opposite of Harry Potter, which uses green/calm/dispassionate/cold to represent bad, and red/passion to represent good.
And then there's A Song of Ice and Fire, where a sort of grey/blue/cold initially represents good, and red/passion/anger represents bad. But you end up seeing how the different qualities can be applied to good or evil depending on the person--calm can be cold and calculating and evil, or it can be cold and stoic and uprightly heroic. And passion can be cruel and dominating and destructive, or it can be passionate and loving and fiercely fighting for good.
And yeah, um, the point of that rant is that Star Wars (and Harry Potter) are both too simplistic in attributing one characteristic as "bad" and the other "good" when really they have potential for both depending on the person and that person's choices....
....
Dirt is a classic. Lots of people prefer Jar of Flies, though, which is more accessible and prettier, but so sad it hurts me to listen to it. Dirt still has some fight in it, passion and horror and struggle, instead of tragic resignation.....
I liked Beetlejuice and Big Fish a lot. The others not so much. I was so disappointed by Nightmare Before Christmas... I wanted to love it, but there were all these songs and it was so boring and I couldn't get into it....
Anyway... sorry for the lengthy response, you got me thinking!

Date: 2005-06-17 09:46 am (UTC)-Joe's CDs is another favorite place of mine to buy used music. It's on St Mark's.
-Kim's Video is great for obscure and used movies and music. That's on St. Mark's, too.
Can't people be passionate and badass and not, y'know, mass murderers?
That bugs me, too. I wish Lucas could have had a character like that, instead of Jar Jar.
I remember when I first heard Dirt. It represented my state of mind at the time (I wasn't a drug user, just depressed and obsessed with/afraid of death). Jar of Flies is a release, and it's easier for me to listen to it now. Dirt brings back memories and feelings. It's relentless.
I can't believe I've found someone that isn't into Nightmare Before Christmas. I thought I was the only one. I mean, I like it, but I don't get what the big deal is. I can't watch it over and over, I don't care about the songs. I dig the visuals but, well, meh.
Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands are my favorites. Ewan was adorable in Big Fish.
For future reference, I love lengthy responses to questions about entertainment.
