I'm leaving tonight for Los Angeles, where I will meet up with [livejournal.com profile] 10zlaine. [livejournal.com profile] lonners will be joining us on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, we'll head to San Diego for Comic Con, which is going to be so totally awesome. (Pssst, VM fans? Jason Dohring is on the Veronica Mars panel. >:)

I'll be back on Monday July 18.

I know I have obligations to fulfill, but unfortunately it's been an insanely busy week (work, packing, trip planning, etc.) and I haven't gotten to everything. If you're waiting for something from me (fic archiving, Q&A response, mailed videotapes, etc...), I will take care of it when I return. I apologize for the delay.

I'll be checking my email periodically, if you need to get in touch.

NIN tickets for MSG are going on sale while I'm gone. I'll have to figure out a way to get online for those.

Bye! :)

When you're here in LA , and if you have a car (because if you don't getting around will be impossible), try to visit the Beechwood Canyon/Los Feliz/Silverlake area, which is practically the only interesting part of town (roughly analogous to the Village, Chelsea, East Village). Also, here you'll find actual vegan-friendly restaurants (Fred 62, Electric Lotus, Tantra, 101 Cafe (which is actually on the Hollywood border) and Indian Sweets and Spices). If you venture into Eagle Rock which is north east of these neighborhoods, you'll actually find two vegan-friendly restaurants (Blue Hen, which is yummy Vietnamese food, and Fatty's, which is fabulous neo-Californian food).

If you must stay on the west side, try Real Food Daily and the Newsroom (both have branches in West Hollywood and Santa Monica). Most Thai, Japanese and Indian restaurants have some vegan choices, too.

I hope you have fun here! If you go to Hollywood it will probably disappoint you -- although it's undergone some cosmetic changes in the last few years, it's still fairly run down and skid-row-ish looking. The only good block is Sunset between Vine and Ivar -- that's where the Arclight/Cinerama Dome theatre complex is, as well as Amoeba Records (fantastic!), Borders, the Klasky-Csupo Nickelodeon store, etc.

Comic-con tips: take a backpack -- good for storing water and snacks (the prices in the convention center are usurious) and for toting around any freebies. There is a vegan-friendly Mexican restaurant on 10th and E Street within walking distance of the convention center called Pokez Mexican and Vegetarian Cafe -- it's pretty divey (it's sort of an artists' collective), but the food is good and cheap. The only other vegan-friendly restaurant I can think of offhand is The Big Kitchen, which is on Grape near Balboa Park (you'll need a car or taxi). Remember, if things get too tough food-wise, there's a huge Ralph's supermarket on Market Street a few blocks from the convention center -- they have a salad bar and a natural foods aisle.

Another thing about the CC: if you don't show up early on Saturday to get in line for the big panels, you won't get in. The crowds are massive now, and if there's something you really want to see, getting there at least and hour and a half before the doors open isn't untoward (it might even be too late). Bring a book or an iPod.

If you see Jason Dohring, please post a report! And have fun.

Ack! Forgot to mention that if you're really desperate to find something vegan to eat in SD, there is a Whole Foods on the corner of University and 7th in the Hillcrest area, which is easy to find if you have access to a car (or a taxi) -- just go north on 5th Street from downtown/Gaslamp (which is right across from the convention center) for about two or three miles and turn right onto University. You can't miss it.
