I'm goofing off, can you tell?

I am completely breaking the rule of fives on this thing. Not even trying.

Back in the Day: 5 TV Shows You Loved As A Kid

* Thundercats
* Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
* Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers
* Inspector Gadget
* Charles in Charge
(when I was a bit older)

Who Would You Do?: 5 TV Characters You Would...Well, It's Self-Explanatory

* The Tenth Doctor (Doctor Who)
* The Master (played by John Simm) (Doctor Who)
* Sam Tyler (also played by John Simm, but totally different) (Life on Mars)
* Methos (Highlander)
* Jim Profit (Profit)
* Richard Sharpe (Sharpe)
* Fox Mulder (The X-Files)
* Stephen Colbert (although, more the performer than the character) (The Colbert Report)

What? No, No, I Don't Watch That...: 5 Guilty Pleasure TV Shows

* Renegade (about 15 years ago)
* Kung Fu: The Legend Continues (about 15 years ago, until even I got too horrified to watch)
* The A-Team. Knight Rider. These are all things that I killed time with on Saturday afternoons when I was ten.
* The first few seasons of Highlander, before Methos showed up and made it actually good
* I'd say Beavis and Butt-Head, but I actually think it's an awesome show. No guilt there.
* I'd say Torchwood, but it's not even a pleasure, just a waste of time. I don't think I feel guilty about anything I watch these days.

Wow: 5 TV Moments You Still Remember (And Probably Won't Forget)
(Conclusion: 90% of my favorite moments are scenes of people having breakdowns. Hmmm.)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
* Buffy killing Angel to save the world at the end of season two. Back when I had sympathy for her and thought it was awful. And then she came back and her friends were such assholes that I hated them all and stopped watching the show.
* Spike breaking down at the end of "The Gift."

Doctor Who
* The Master dying in the Doctor's arms, and the Doctor breaking down and sobbing over his handcuffed corpse (!!!)
* Rose in tears on the beach, and the Doctor running out of time before he can say he loves her.

Highlander
*The "jimmy scene," in which Methos and Duncan have their big tearful breakup just because Methos killed a bunch of people once. The corresponding shock that Methos had once been a villain, and the wonderful realization that it made sense and was completely in character for a character I loved.
* The scene where Methos finally takes a stand and fights Silas. The look in Duncan's eyes when he realizes what Methos has done. Duncan begging Cassandra for Methos' life. Methos breaking down. God, the whole thing.
* Methos chopping that bitch Kristen's head off. The whole smug moral universe of Highlander, shattered.
* The scene where it was strongly implied that Methos was sleeping with Lord Byron. It was a terrible episode and I can't remember much about it, but I loved that.

The X-Files
* Mulder shrieking like a little girl. The first time I saw "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space'" I was hysterical with delight.
* The roach crawling on the inside of the TV screen. Ewww!!!!
* That incestuous crippled mother kept under the bed on a board that rolls out in "Home." Pretty much the entirety of "Home," actually.
* Krycek's eyes going black from the alien oil stuff. And him looking so hot.

Profit
* Profit climbing into that cardboard box and curling up to go to sleep.

South Park
* Cartman tricking Scott Tenorman into eating his own parents. And then Radiohead walking by and laughing. And Cartman licking the tears off of his face.

Beavis and Butt-Head
* Beavis getting hypnotized by the saw and purposely cutting his finger off. I love Beavis.

The Original "The Jon Stewart Show"
* This is an obscure one, but the second-to-last episode of this hour-long talk show, which aired for a season in 1994-1995, was the most surreal thing I've ever seen. First there was a Willy Wonka parody sketch in which Jon was Charlie, except instead of chocolate it was meat. They went to the "Magical Meat Factory" and swam in the river of blood. And there were animal corpses everywhere. It's part of why I went vegan.

Then they did an interview with some woman who played a vampire (they talked about drinking chocolate syrup made up to look like blood) and then Marilyn Manson performed and lit the stage on fire during "Lunchbox" (he actually lit a lunchbox on fire but it accidentally spread to the stage). Jon ran over to stamp it out and Manson tried to climb on top of him while Twiggy, in drag, molested him from behind.

They went to commercial break, then Jon brought out some green young actor who was so riled up by Manson that he immediately grabbed his coffee cup and smashed it onto the table, cutting his hand open on a shard. He spent the entire interview *bleeding* while Jon attempted to administer first aid.

And then Manson performed again at the end, despite the fact that they'd molested Jon and lit the stage on fire earlier in the evening.

"Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs": 5 TV Theme Songs You Know (and Love) By Heart

Umm.... I can remember most of the words to the 80s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme....

Eh: 5 Shows You Just Can't Get Into
* Any reality television ever.
* Supernatural, not that I tried very hard. The first episode reeked of misogyny.
* Torchwood. God, it's awful.

The Starting Line-Up: 5 Channels You Go To First When You Sit Down to Watch TV
Comedy Central
BBC America
VH1 Classics
... then I just scan the programming, with eyes out for Fox, TBS, and the premium channels my roommate ordered

This Is An Environment of Welcoming, and You Should Just Get the Hell Out: 5 TV Characters You Could Do Without

* Buffy. Oh my god I fucking hate her. And Xander. And Dawn. I could go on.
* Martha. She's so boring! What the hell do you people see in her? She starts out superawesomeperfect and the conclusion of her story is that she's even MORE superawesomeperfect! What the hell kind of story is that?
* Every single character on Veronica Mars, except Logan. Especially Veronica.
* Every single character in Torchwood. Special notice to Owen.

That's What She Said: Quotes That Still Resonate

"Say my name." "Master" (Doctor Who, "Utopia")
"I like it when you say my name." and "Are you asking me out on a date?" (Doctor Who, "The Sound of Drums")

The Master and the Doctor are the HOTTEST THING EVER.

"I win." (Doctor Who, "Last of the Time Lords") Really, that whole scene. I love them.

"You don't have a soul. There is nothing good or clean in you. I could never be your girl." (Buffy, "Dead Things") GOD I FUCKING HATE HER. This quote sums up pretty much the entirety of the bad taste left in my mouth by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and totally cancels out all the good quotes I would've otherwise remembered.

Methos' entire jimmy scene speech (Highlander, "Comes a Horseman"): "I killed. But I didn't just kill fifty, I didn't kill a hundred. I killed a thousand. I killed ten thousand. And I was good at it. And it wasn't for vengeance. It wasn't for greed. It was because — I liked it. Cassandra was nothing. Her village was nothing. Do you know who I was? I was Death.

Death — Death on a horse. When mothers warned their children that the monster would get them, that monster was me. I was the nightmare that kept them awake at night. Is that what you want to hear? The answer is yes, oh yes." I LOVE HIM.

"You don't know anything about me." (Highlander, "Revelation 6:8") Methos to Silas, as he finally chooses a side. *loves more* And then, later, "I killed Silas. I liked Silas." Oh, Methos, I love you so much. No easy moral choices for you.

"A man who was born long before the Age of Chivalry." (Highlander, "Chivalry") METHOS HAS THE BEST QUOTES.

"Dude, I think it might be best for us to never piss Cartman off again." Hee. (South Park, "Scott Tenorman must die")

Gimme More: 5 Shows You Can Never Get Enough Of

Erm, that I haven't already mentioned in this meme? I don't think I like that many shows. Ooh, I didn't mention La Femme Nikita. I used to like that. One day I'll actually see it all. And Futurama. I like Futurama. Oh, and somehow I didn't mention The Daily Show.

And another meme, gakked from [livejournal.com profile] viciouswishes.

Name a fandom I'm into and I will tell you:

I wanna do Colbert the character, for serious.

I also wanna be really mean and make you do that meme with regard to Torchwood. Still, though, did you see the Jack/Jack episode? It really actually was pretty awesome.

I dunno, he'd be all about himself. And then he'd probably cry.

Heh, the meme in regard to Torchwood. I might do it once I finish the first season. Right now, my favorite character is the Doctor's disembodied hand. Because the Doctor's got more intelligence in one hand than the entire Torchwood team put together.

I haven't seen the Jack/Jack episode, but I'm kind of (cautiously) looking forward to it, since everyone's been telling me it's worthwhile.

Heh yes, exactly! I am certain he would cry. That would be awesome.

Honestly I have only seen the first handful of TW episodes and the Jack/Jack ep. I quit watching because of the former and decided that maybe the show could come together with the latter. I still won't be downloading until one seems specifically recommended, but I was very, very impressed, and I'm not much into slash (as we all know.)

Oooh, nifty, okay.

1. The first character I fell in love with:

Probably Arya. I loved her innate rejection all the stupid gender role nonsense.

I had a lot of sympathy for Rheagar and Daenerys right from the beginning, too.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:

I never thought I'd love Jaime, even though I started the series because everyone told me I would. I just couldn't fathom that I'd ever find him likable. And, of course, I totally adore him now.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don't:

Jon. He's completely boring.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates:

I guess Jaime? He seems to be a very love/hate character, depending which part of fandom you're in. Lots of people hate Dany, too; I don't love her, but I like her a lot.

5. The character I would shag anytime:

Totally Jaime.

6. The character I'd want to be like:

Jaime. (The part where he realizes he can change his own destiny and isn't beholden to the mistakes of his past, not the part where he fucks his sister and kills children.)

7. The character I'd slap:

Sansa. Oh my god Sansa needs a slap.

8. A pairing that I love:

Jaime/Brienne is so sweet and doomed.

9. A pairing that I despise:

Do I despise any pairings? Even the creepy ones are usually creepy in a good way. I'll say Ned/Cat because I can't stand either of them and the idea of their sex life makes me cringe.

10. Favorite character:

Duh. Jaime Lannister.

11. What are your five favorite things about your fandom?

Well, I'm not in the fandom, so I'll give my five favorite things about the books.
* The moral ambiguity. There are very few "good guys" and "bad guys"; just lots of people struggling to make it through the world.
* The complexity of the writing. I love being able to re-read frequently and pick up new things every time, especially the insane amount of foreshadowing that Martin obviously has a lot of fun sneaking in.
* The world-building. The fact that Martin's world really feels like a place with its own history and mythology, and the ways that history and mythology effect the current world. He really captures the way history turns into myth, and the way real events get distorted as they filter through the grapevine and change based on cultural expectations.
* Jaime. I just freaking love Jaime so much. He throws a kid off a tower and Martin STILL makes me love him!
* The female characters. Martin portrays a sexist world but still has as many complex, nuanced, three-dimensional female characters as male characters. They're all different, and he shows them dealing with their world and the related gender issues in a variety of ways.
* The humor. You don't often find a fantasy book that gets so bawdy. Especially with characters like Tyrion.
(Oops, that's six.)

12. What are your five least favorite things about your fandom?

* I know that Jaime is going to die, and it makes me sad.
* All the heraldry and house and military history. It's okay as background in the books, but when people get obsessed with memorizing it all and quoting it like baseball statistics, it just gets ridiculous. Let's talk about the characters, not the freaking banners they carry around.
* I'm annoyed that all the "look! lesbians!" doesn't have a male equivalent.
* That we're supposed to view Ned as a paragon of virtue when he's obviously just an idiot.
* That the Lannisters aren't going to win.

13. Who are your five favorite characters?

Jaime, Tyrion, Daenerys, Rheagar, Asha.

14. Who are your five least favorite characters?

Sansa, Catelyn, Ned, Stannis, Bran.

LOL! Yeah, her description of how sort of somber he was on their wedding night, and how she didn't love him but knew she would grow to do so...and...well, picturing that and...ugh and blech.

[continued from above]

15. What are your five favorite pairings?

Jaime/Brienne, for the sweet doomed-ness
Jaime/Cersei, for the complete fucked-up-ness
Jaime/Loras, because Jaime sees his younger self in Loras and wants to help him to not make the same mistakes
Renly/Loras, because Loras is so young and innocent, and Renly's not evil, just naive
Sandor/Sansa, 'cause, okay, it's kind Beauty and the Beast sweet
Asha/Theon, for the LOLZ
Rheagar/Lyanna, poor doomed things

16. What are your five least favorite pairings?

It's not really a pairing-centric fandom, is it? I'll give the ones that it makes me shudder to read about.

Ned/Cat, again, ew.
Craster/his daughters (ewww).
Sansa/Joffrey (you'd think the world would explode from the combined narcissism)
Walder Frey/anyone
Petyr/Sansa (iiiiick)

17. Which character are you most like?

Hmmm. What do you think? I relate a whole lot to Brienne's insecurities, but I wish I was snarky and irreverent and confident like Jaime.

18. What is your deep, dark fandom secret?

I've asked George R. R. Martin twice to put more m/m slash in the books. The first time was a tongue-in-cheek question during a book signing. The second was TOTALLY NOT MY FAULT because I didn't think there was any way Entertainment Weekly would actually use my question.

*Cartoons and Charles in Charge (which was kinda like a cartoon, right? Buddy Lembeck. We had no taste).
*Fox Mulder- gah, yes.
*You did used to like Veronica on VM, yes? Before the smugness and 'do as I say not as I do'?

Second meme-
The Lost Boys?

I forgot to mention Duck Tales! Then it would've all been cartoons. My mom only let me watch kid shows as a kid; I wasn't even allowed to watch PG-13 movies until I was thirteen.

I had some kind of peculiar fondness for Charles in Charge. I used to watch it in re-runs after school when I was ten (along with Saved by the Bell and Full House, but I never actually liked those). There was some episode where Buddy was almost killed by a hummingbird that I thought was the funniest thing I'd ever seen in my life.

I LOVED season one Veronica. There are probably posts back in my LJ about how Veronica is the perfect antidote to Buffy; realistic, three-dimensional, open-minded, genuinely compassionate, not afraid to use her brains, and not obsessed with being "normal" over anything else. And then season two happened. :(

Lost Boys! Okay.

1. The first character I fell in love with:

I first saw this movie late-night channel surfing as a young teenager, and thought Michael was the hottest thing ever.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:

All of them? I'll say David, because I generally find Kiefer Sutherland to be creepy and unattractive, but he's super hot in Lost Boys.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don't:

I think I love every character except Star. Does anyone love her?

4. The character I love that everyone else hates:

I adore the Frog brothers. Especially the Corey Feldman one. I know lots of people hate Corey Feldman, but I don't know if Lost Boys fans do. I think you must have to love the Frog brothers on some level in order to be a Lost Boys fan in the first place.

5. The character I would shag anytime:

David.

6. The character I'd want to be like:

Ummm.... I love how nonchalant Grandpa is in the face of danger. I don't see any of these characters as role models, though.

7. The character I'd slap:

Michael could use a good slapping. Plus he's pretty when he hurts.

8. A pairing that I love:

David/Michael. OMG SLASH HEAVEN.

9. A pairing that I despise:

Star/Michael. I hate het ships shoved in just because.

10. Favorite character:

I LOVE THEM ALL. I want to cuddle adorable little Sam, and I want to join in a David/Michael sandwich. I can't choose between the three of them.

11. What are your five favorite things about your fandom?

I'm not in the fandom. In the text:
* It's like two completely different movies Frankensteined together. This is probably an accident of too many hands in the pot, but I love it anyway. It's like a goofy teen comedy awkwardly sewn into an ultra serious melodramatic vampire sex drama.
* The music is awesome.
* All of the characters are completely insane, but in a likable way.
* That Star/Michael sex scene is one of the hottest things ever. And I don't even like Star, and it's PG-rated.
* The actors are far too good for the ridiculousness of the movie, but they're 100% into it. Kiefer Sutherland, Dianne Weist, Jason Patric... and young Corey Haim was so promising. They're all so fun to watch.

12. What are your five least favorite things about your fandom?

* The only thing I don't really like is Star. Well, and that the vampires die. I've read arguments that it's a movie that rejects subculture in favor of the traditional family and the status quo, but I think this is subverted by the fact that the ultimate villain is the perfect 50s TV dad trying to claim patriarchal authority.

13. Who are your five favorite characters?

Michael, David, Sam, whichever Frog brother Corey plays, Lucy.

14. Who are your five least favorite characters?

Star, Laddie, those cheesy greased up guys in that band on the beach.

15. What are your five favorite pairings?

Michael/David. Sam/Rob Lowe. Sam/the Frog brothers. David/the vampire from Bill and Ted.

16. What are your five least favorite pairings?

Michael/Star.

17. Which character are you most like?

Hmmm... I can be a self-obsessed whiny emo brat like Michael.

18. What is your deep, dark fandom secret?

I think the fact that The Lost Boys is in my list of top ten movies of all time is bad enough. Oh! And I wrote a twenty-page paper about it in college, and got an A.

I was going to respond in order, but when I saw you ship David/Michael I had to start there. So. Hot. I wish there were more slash fic for TLB. Those boys were mighty purdy back in the day.

*Season one of VM was perfect. It probably should have ended there, a one season, serialized mystery.

*Jason Patric was gorgeous in the 80s. I love when he goes to attack his brother and is all snarly. I remember my sister went to see the movie just for him. I was too young to go with her. :(
*Agreed about Kiefer Sutherland. The man has no lips. Very hot in TLB, though.
*I don't think the 80s would have been the same without the Coreys.
*Yes to your reasons for loving the film. I still can't believe how young the actors were then- Kiefer and Jason were about 19 or 20.
*I've read arguments that it's a movie that rejects subculture in favor of the traditional family and the status quo, but I think this is subverted by the fact that the ultimate villain is the perfect 50s TV dad trying to claim patriarchal authority. You don't remember where you read this, do you? I like your argument.
*How can you not love that nasty sax player? Too awesome to be believed.
*There is no shame in Lost Boys love.

*Corey F. was Edgar and Bill S. Preston esq. was Marko. Uh, yeah, I'm still obsessed with this movie.

I wish there were more slash fic for TLB.

People write fic about anything else? Seriously, I assumed that's all there was to Lost Boys fandom. I barely knew what homosexuality was when I was eleven, and even I saw the slashy subtext. David's echoing voice going "Michael... Michael... be one of us..."? The way he looked at him? David wanted to eat Michael alive, and not just in the vampire way.

You don't remember where you read this, do you? I like your argument.

I took a class on vampire films in college (NYC, Tisch Cinema Studies) and when we got to the 80s teen portion of the class, the professor threw a bitch fit about how awful Lost Boys is and now Near Dark is far superior. So we watched Near Dark in class and I nearly fell asleep (although now that I know it's got Adrian Pasdar I'm going to have to go back and re-watch it). That's what pissed me off and inspired me to write the paper defending it, because he acted like there was only one completely obvious interpretation that Lost Boys is just mainstream status-quo supporting drivel.

There were definitely papers mentioning it in our class readings, and none of them said anything particularly positive, but that's probably because the anti-Lost Boys teacher chose them. I can't remember any of the sources now, though; probably film studies journals and articles from academic books about vampires and horror films.... they were all pretty dismissive.

Season one of VM was perfect. It probably should have ended there, a one season, serialized mystery.

I so wish it had. I have the first season on DVD; maybe once the rest of it has faded enough from my mind, I'll be able to go back and enjoy it.

You know of any good David/Michael stories?
I joined a yahoo group for the movie in 1999, and none of the stories were slashy. Mostly how the boys came together, or OC getting involved, or little drabbles (that would be me). I don't frequent fanfiction.net and only know of the site that sprang from that old yahoo group, so I guess I'm out of the loop on pretty boy vampires fucking. Woe.

David wanted to eat Michael alive, and not just in the vampire way. That would have been a lovely movie. :D

Now wait a minute; I went to the same school as you (sorta-I was in the acting part) and I never got to enjoy such a class. I missed out. Blatant snobbery on that prof's part. It's so easy to say Near Dark is better. Yes, TLB is a silly movie, but it's fun and quotable and good for rewatching and doesn't take itself seriously. (I do love Near Dark, too.) Laddie is much better than that evil Homer.
