This is so sad: David Brooks on how we never escape our high school selves (in relation to politics, but still).

On the plus side, Stephen Colbert rocks SO much. Colbert at the White House press thingy: part 1, part 2, part 3. And because YouTube is awesome for finding random stuff: Colbert in a cheesy 80s new wave video and "I have a Dreamsicle." Oh, and check out the recent 60 Minutes profile--very interesting.

I admit it, Stephen Colbert really is nearly as awesome as Jon Stewart, in his own particular way. It was so cool to see him utterly shred the Orwellian bullshit that passes for discourse these days, right there in front of the president whose entire administration is built on said bullshit. And did I mention that I have Colbert Report tickets for this June? >:)

I missed Veronica Mars last night because they were showing BASKETBALL. &^%#*!!!!!

I tried to get Alice in Chains tickets during the NYC presale today, but of course the server was overloaded and by the time the page actually loaded they were sold out. Ugh. At least I have the Boston ticket to fall back on.

Pig announced more tour dates. Hmmm... should I fly to Fort Lauderdale? I hate that they're taking so long on this; airplace tickets are getting more expensive every day. :(

My life these days is incessant roommate hunting. *sigh* And work worries, and lots and lots of work...

Oh my god. It's a Colbert Report/Harry Potter crossover. Awesome.

Veronica Mars. The last few episodes haven't sucked nearly as much as the beginning of the season, so I'll post some thoughts, in no real order. ( spoilers for aired VM episodes )

Other stuff...

* I had a strange dream last night, in which I was back in my 12th grade history class with Ms. Moran as the mean scary teacher. I didn't bring my books, because they were heavy and I thought we wouldn't need them, so she snapped at me and then handed out a memo to everyone which included a note about how irresponsible I was for not bringing the books. And for some reason, ros_fod was sitting at the desk next to mine, and kita0610 was sitting behind her. And then there was a fire drill, and I was in trouble because we were supposed to stash our books somewhere, but I hadn't brought any books to stash. And then ros_fod was feeling faint, but Ms. Moran was mean and made her go to the nurse alone, even though kita0610 offered to go with her.

Yeah, don't ask me to explain dreamlogic.

* I randomly flipped over to NIN's "Closer" video on VH1 Classics last night. I'd actually forgotten that Trent used to be skinny and fucked-up and leather clad and hot, instead of looking like your friend's uncle who works as a bouncer. *sigh* Wish I'd seen them live back then.

* South Park hovers in this weird territory between unbelievably funny and just ... stupid. The last two episodes were quite a contrast, as the return of Chef episode was fucking brilliant, and the San Francisco episode was just... so lame. As if those "heartland" folks proclaiming their superiority over the gays and atheists on the coasts aren't just as smug? Way to completely miss the obvious. But, whatever, it's South Park; if you get offended, you're giving them exactly what they want. (I think they mostly just get off on the "subversiveness" of offending as many people as possible, especially the groups that Hollywood usually overlooks.)

I'm too busy:

* Friday night - V for Vendetta with drujan and jaydk

* Saturday night - marathon of Jonathan from Guiding Light with jaydk (and she's agreed to let me force PIG videos on her! Whoo!!)

* Sunday night - WriterCon meeting

* Monday night - I'm going to the Daily Show! I can't wait. :)

* Wednesday - I have jury duty. Yuck.

And somewhere in the midst of all this, I'm working on this other thing, a really cool, really complex project that is supposed to launch in a week. I have a feeling I'm not going to be getting very much sleep in the upcoming days. *deep breath* But I can do it. And it will be cool.

(And on top of it all--I'm still sick from San Francisco! Damn West Coast germs. :P)

I got up at 5am this morning (5am!!!) and waited in line, in the cold, for 2 1/2 hours, so that I could get a wristband which will allow me to wait in another line tonight to meet Depeche Mode. Sadly, the wristbands aren't numbered, so even though I was near the front of the line this morning, I'll most likely be near the end tonight. (I have to, y'know, work today. *sigh*) Cross your fingers for me. If I'm really lucky I'll get to meet Depeche Mode! :)

Common Rotation is playing tonight, and I'm sad to miss them, but I've seen them so many times and I just couldn't resist the possibility of meeting Depeche Mode.

In other news... is it just me, or was the Colbert Report kind of lame? Okay, the headline reading face-off part was really funny. But Stephen Colbert's parody of a egotistical news anchor, while wonderful in small doses, began to annoy me over the course of a half-hour show. I felt bad for the guest, too. With Jon Stewart, you get the sense that Jon is genuinely trying to communicate with the other person, whereas here, you get the sense that the other person is just being pulled in as a prop to Colbert's performance. It's uncomfortable, and not nearly as interesting.

Plus, I think that, for me, the essential aspect of a talk show is that I like and trust the anchor, that I enjoy watching him and I relate to him. This is part of why I adore Jon Stewart--I've been watching him (off and on) for eleven years and I like him immensely. That's also why I liked watching Conan, too (although Andy was the really likeable one, and Conan's gotten much less enjoyable without him). And that's why, no matter how interesting the guest, watching Jay Leno or Craig Kilborn is like pulling teeth, because I can't stand either of them. Anyway, the point being that Colbert is funny as an anchor, but there's no depth to him, and so far I don't really look forward to seeing him lead a half hour show.

Also--I'm really going to miss the Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert interaction. They are twice as funny when they're together, and none of the other correspondents are nearly as good as Colbert. The Daily Show is going to suffer without him. :(
