Oct. 16th, 2003 11:05 amI'm a Spike fan. Not an Angel fan. Not a Buffy fan. A Spike fan. Spike is the character that I find interesting and intriguing and fun to watch. I would not be watching either show if he wasn't on it. If he ceased to be on it, I would stop watching.
I find most of the other characters at best only mildly interesting, and at worst, tiresome and irritating. I think that some of the plots are interesting, and a lot of them aren't. The ME brand of "feminism" makes me violently ill and I'd never watch another of their shows again if I didn't want to see Spike. Spike is actually the only fictional character I care about enough to watch TV for; without him I'd probably get rid of my television and not miss it.
So what if my character's not in the title? I'm not going to rearrange my preferences and pretend to be interested in characters that I don't care about just because they're the supposed "real" central characters.
You think this makes me a bad fan? Fuck off. I don't need your approval, and there is nothing wrong with watching for one character.

Date: 2003-10-16 03:32 pm (UTC)I wrote letters in S6 and got the attempted rape in response, so I've given up on writing to ME.
But yeah, this is more a disgust with fandom than with the show anyway. Spike fans are, like, the lepers of Buffy fandom and I'm incredibly sick of it. All these Angel fans going around acting like they're so much better than everyone else because they like the correct character, and we "rabid Spike fen" have the gall to like the wrong character, the one who's not in the title. What am I supposed to do? It's not like I can force myself to care about a character who means nothing to me. And why should I? There is nothing wrong with liking Spike! He's wonderfully complex and multi-faceted and interesting. I run a big website devoted to exploring his complexities; is that meaningless because Spike's not in the title, and I'm deluded to care about his story instead of Buffy's/Angel's/Wesley's?
Ugh. Some people seriously need to get over their superiority complexes. Spike fans are here, there's nothing wrong with us, and we are not going away.

Date: 2003-10-16 04:15 pm (UTC)the spike that i've seen on AtS is someone i'm not sure that i know, or that i like. the spike i knew was someone it took 3 seasons to fall head over heels in love with, & even though i don't see him know, he's still why i watch. there's hope (against all odds). like a candle. or a match, as it were.

Date: 2003-10-16 04:41 pm (UTC)My god, that's funny. Because in real life, I'm like the one in the corner, whispering my opinions to my friend and then trying to get her to say it for me, because I'm too shy to speak myself. LJ is, uh, different.
Yes, I'm not sure I know this Spike either. We'll see. I can buy him changing so drastically because he's been through such a drastic experience, but they haven't shown me that. Yeah, he suffered great physical pain, but he was always getting horribly tortured on BtVS. Where did this sudden personality transplant come from? Why is he reverting to S4 Spike? I always knew it was a facade, but now I want to see what's underneath, and they're not showing it.

Date: 2003-10-16 04:34 pm (UTC)AtS, OTOH, I've been watching pretty much all along because even with the ups and downs, I think it's been mostly a good, entertaining show as a whole. I never cared much for Angel himself until the Connor arc, but the quality of the entire production and Wesley's story especially in the past couple years has kept me tuning in. I thought AtS was far better than BtVS last year, and provided me with a lot more entertainment.
So to get lectured now on how sososo wrong, dammit, it is to watch a show just for a single character is pretty hysterical. Man, that ship sailed years ago -- and it was a different ship ;-).
