I still don't have my Moonlight Rising photos scanned, but I did finally post some older photos from the Creation con in New Jersey in March. The guests were Nick Brendon, Stephanie Romanov, Robia LaMorte, Iyari Limon, and Robin Atkin Downes. Photos are here.
I also have Common Rotation at the Bitter End from early this year, and Eric Kufs solo early this year.
I spent my weekend absorbed in the latest Dark Tower book. (How did I not know this came out? I walked into the bookstore this weekend and almost screamed.) I've been following this series for (what feels like) forever--I'm not actually much of a Stephen King fan, but I adore The Dark Tower.
I was a little bit disappointed, but overall I enjoyed it. It could've been longer, and I would have liked more and deeper characterization/interaction between Roland and Eddie. (And no Cuthbert at all! I know he's a "twin" for Eddie, but I love Cuthbert on his own ... couldn't we have had a little Cuthbert flashback?) But I'm glad that the character Susannah was more fleshed out, with the flashbacks to her civil-rights past. I've always felt that she's the greatest weakness in the series--one-dimensional, clichéd, boring--so it was nice to see King treating her more like a character instead of a token woman. (Not that he does it on purpose, but he just tends to write her solely in relation to men and solely in stereotypical female positions, even when he's clearly trying not to.)
I also have no problem with the self-insertion thing, which I know bothers a lot of people. I have a huge RPF squick, but if the person is writing it about himself it's not so bad. I also don't think he was being egotistical or trying to glorify himself; he's just another character. I love how it ties into the intros he's been writing over the years for each book; I imagined this turn as one possibility a very long time ago, so I don't find it jarring. I'm very intrigued to find where he will eventually take it.
