See, this is the perfect example of how I have no control over what my brain decides to do.
These obsessions just seize me from out of nowhere, take over my brain (for an hour or a week or a year, who knows?) and then fade off into nothing.
Like for the past few days I have been listening to the KMFDM album "Nihil." Listening as I fall asleep, listening when I wake up, listening while I walk to work, listening while I work, listening to the songs play in my head even when the music is off. For the previous few days the song "Brute" was playing over and over; today it's "Juke Joint Jezebel."
I realize that the reason I like this record more than the other KMFDM albums I've listened to is that I really love the vocalist/lyricist for most of the songs on "Nihil," Raymond Watts. He's on some of their other records, but not the ones that I own.
He's also the really hot & rather goofy British guy on the KMFDM "Beat by Beat" home video. Mmmm... hot British guy.
He's also Pig, who was on Trent Reznor's Nothing Records label in the 90s. My friend Mike used to wear Pig shirts all through high school. Must ask Mike for album recommendations....
He's also the really tall guy in the cowboy hat and big shiny coat that I saw standing outside of Irving Plaza when I saw KMFDM a year and a half ago. I was standing outside in a tiny dress waiting for my friend, and he was also standing outside. I can't remember if we exchanged words, but we exchanged looks and I remembering wondering if he was in the band.
And then I went in and yes, he was in the band. And the singer of my favorite KMFDM song, "Flesh," from which the "rusty halo" lyric was stuck in my head for days after that concert.
A quick internet search indicates that he may have had a falling out with KMFDM, was not on this year's KMFDM tour, released a record under the name Watts which didn't do well, and is possibly in the midst of divorce and heroin recovery. A group of fans on LJ are banding together to mail him a card signed by his fans from all over the world.
There's a video here in which he looks very hot, but the song is kind of lame:

And I'll bet you in a week, I won't care at all, but for the moment I don't have any control over what my brain chooses to obsess over.

Date: 2004-12-03 08:34 pm (UTC)I'm drifting into places like The Well and CBLDF- comics, books, freedom of speech... I just hope I can still call you up when I'm in town (which seems won't be for a while :( ).

Date: 2004-12-03 10:15 pm (UTC)I wouldn't be surprised if there's some eventual falling-out, since KMFDM has always had a fairly variable lineup - Sascha being, of course, the one constant. But Raymond Watts was still touring with them as of last year, and there are a couple of great Watts vocals on the last album, WWIII. ("Pity For The Pious" and "Revenge" are just fabulous.)

I know; the WWIII tour is the one I saw him on.
I'm probably assuming the worst because he wasn't on this year's 20th anniversary tour, plus heroin rumors are never good. But who knows.
