I am unsatisfied with my responses to the senior year meme. So I decided that, since senior year was such a nonentity for me, I would redo my answers. Only this time it's about 10th grade instead of senior year.... Because in 10th grade I actually felt somewhat involved in high school life instead of being emotionally numb and just killing time until I could move far away.

What, obsess about the past? Me?

What year was it?
1997-98

What were your three favorite bands?
Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains (with Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, and Korn lurking in the background... and there was always old favorites Soundgarden, Hole, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees....)

What was your favorite outfit?
Oversized jeans--even better if the knees had ripped open on their own. Large black band t-shirts (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Korn, Manson, NIN, etc.) Converse hi-tops.

I started experimenting that year with clothes that actually fit. I think this pissed off Danielle, because she thought I was selling out and being a slut. (I was selling out and being shallow, but dammit, I was sick of being ugly.)

What was up with your hair?
It was long, thick, brown, boring, frizzy, greasy, hideous. Except I dyed it for the first time that year, so then it was red, and later black.

Who were your best friends?
Danielle and Sarah were my best friends ("LSD Forever"). Plus Jeff, Mike, Chris, Joe, Erin, Kerry...

What did you do after school?
Teach myself to cook (vegan). Watch TV and tape everything even remotely interesting. Read. Talk to Danielle on the phone. Go to someone's house (usually mine) and videotape us doing stupid shit. Make lots of home movies. Write stories and scripts, then try to film them. Watch cheesy movies and MST3K them ("Red Scorpion" was the best). Talk about how much we hated our school and its conformist culture. Wander around the Shoprite/movie theater area, because it was the social center of our town. Drink slurpees at Wawa, and pretend to steal things to scare the owners with our evil teenage-ness.

Where did you work?
Didn't. Except I babysat a lot; really liked the family that I babysat for.

Did you take the bus?
Yep.

Who did you have a crush on?
Tarik Parvez. He was an amazing artist, he could play guitar, and he liked the same bands as me. Plus, he was cute (curly black hair, pretty dark eyes) and seemed really easygoing and confident.

And then in the spring, this crush--which had obsessed me and made me miserable for two years--actually faded away. Joy! Yet it was to be replaced by a much worse crush on a boy named Aaron Artessa, a friend of Jeff's, who was all cute and messed up and gothic and went to a different school and HAD A GIRLFRIEND. God, I'm stupid.

Did you fight with your parents?
What do you think?

Who did you have a CELEBRITY crush on?
Layne Staley, Marilyn Manson, Trent Reznor, Eddie Vedder, Gavin Rossdale, Jonathan Davis....

Did you smoke cigarettes?
I tried once and got bronchitis for a week.

My parents both smoked, so there was never much lure. Our house always stank of cigarette smoke anyway, and it made me really nauseated.

Did you lug all of your books around in your backpack all day because you were too nervous to find your locker?
I wasn't too nervous, but there was rarely time to get to your locker between classes, so I often had to lug lots of books around. You WOULD get in trouble if you didn't have a book, and I didn't want to get singled out; I preferred to remain under the radar as much as possible. And I still cared about grades back then.... I was the weird kid in the honors classes.

Did you have a 'clique'?
Yeah, I was really proud because that was the first (and only) year of my life where I felt like I really belonged in a group and could be myself at the same time. We were sort of the anti-clique in that we accepted anyone who didn't like the rigid social structures of the other groups, who could see through the high school bullshit that everyone else was consumed by. We had goth kids and "normal"-looking kids in our group, drug users and straight edge kids, special ed and honor students--it was about respecting each other's differences instead of all being the same. We prized intelligence, independent-thinking, and creativity above all. I really adored my friends that year.

Did you have "The Max" like Zach Kelly and Slater?
Our town hangout was the Shoprite. Ugh.

Admit it, were you popular?
No, but I didn't care. The only social group that mattered was my friends, and I was popular enough with them.

Who did you want to be just like?
Myself only with a boyfriend and not living in Montgomery. Stupid boyfriend obsession ruined everything.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
A film director.

Where did you think you'd be at the age you are now?
Dead, or making movies with Danielle.

Dead, or making movies with Danielle.

I can't help asking: what is Danielle doing nowadays?

I haven't seen any.

I would assume so. She graduated NYU film school. Plus she's brilliant.
