Tonight I'm going to see VNV Nation. I don't like them that much, but my friend April is supposed to be there.

Depeche Mode is touring the U.S. this fall. I haven't seen tour dates yet, though.

NIN is also touring the U.S. this fall, with Queens of the Stone Age. They're playing Madison Square Garden on November 3. I am SO there. They'll also be in Philadelphia on November 5, which is a Saturday, so I might go to that, too. No clue yet when tickets are going on sale, though.

There a really interesting guide to electronic music here. The tutorial (history lesson) is neat, and the maps (of genres over time and place) are fascinating. Click "trance" to find the good stuff (goth, industrial, synthpop, darkwave, industrial rock, etc.) They've got Cruxshadows, KMFDM, NIN, blah blah blah, pretty much every band I like is represented somewhere. (I'd love to read an in-depth history of the evolution of these genres....)

Bruce Campbell will be at the Angelika Film Center tomorrow, signing at 10pm and showing his movie at 11:30. If I'm lucky, I might be able to go to that.

This week has sucked--work's been insanely stressful, and I've had to rush home to show my apartment every night. I'm going to try to make up for it this weekend.

I've been listening to NIN, With Teeth and The Fragile. Yes, I finally opened the shrink-wrapped copy of The Fragile that's been sitting on my CD shelf for the past five years. And hey, it's like, really good! Bunches of people have told me this over the years, but I always lacked the desire to listen to it. I'm enjoying it immensely now, though; I guess I had to wait to be in the right emotional place or something.

laura, i'm not sure if there's anything available, but really the genesis of a lot of what you like is through straight up german electro & later EBM, which came from belgian/dutch new beat (neubeat). praga khan & lords of acid are the worst examples of that. but some of the better tracks are just plodding continental reworkings of detroit techno. it's really rather fascinating. if you want good histories of genres at large modulations, last night a DJ saved my life, & genreation ecstasy / energy flash are good guides, but they'll just get you through the basics: jazz, R&B, disco, german electro, & europop turning into house & techno stateside, then pollinating across the atlantic, then back to here.

It is really interesting, I've done a lot of reading in general. But I haven't seen much that addresses the stuff I actually like. (I did hear that someone had written an in-depth history of industrial-type music in the 80s and 90s but was having trouble getting it published; I'd have loved to read that.)

But then what I'd REALLY love to read is for someone to look at its evolution and themes from a cultural studies perspective. Most of the "industrial rock" music I listen to is concerned with the relationship of the individual to society and technology, and the way those interact and struggle and ultimately create and/or destroy each other.... and a lot of influences go back to film noir, or to philosophers like Nietzsche, there's all these interesting layers of influence to explore....

But I'm lazy, and I want someone to do the research and write it for me so that I can read about it. :)

you might want to read about detroit techno & how detroit architecture, urban decline/decay, "white flight," & alvin toffler's the third wave was the sociological model for what a lot of young artists were trying to do with music. that in turn influenced EBM. there's quite a bit on that.

Oh, awesome. I saw this site (in a much earlier version) about a year ago, and I've tried and failed to find it after that.

*bookmarks the hell out of it*

I'm all about the Euro House branches, though. Sorry. ;)

Bruce Campbell! First Audioslave and now Bruce Campbell. Ack! I'm so jealous.
BTW, Detroit just had its Techno Music Festival a few weeks ago.

Wow, that site rocks. I no longer have to nod wisely and back out of the conversation when people split subgenre hairs in my presence. I will know the difference between Happy Hardcore and Goa! This is cool. Thank you. :-)

I was going to go to that VNV show, but I was too tired. You're a nice friend.
DM? Nice.I love
The Fragile. When that man is fucked up he makes pretty music.
Thanks for the music link.
