I generally don't get into poetry. But I always liked this one. Apologies for my predictability, and if someone has already posted this.

The Conqueror Worm
Edgar Allan Poe

Lo! 'tis a gala night
Within the lonesome latter years!
An angel throng, bewinged, bedight
In veils, and drowned in tears,
Sit in a theatre, to see
A play of hopes and fears,
While the orchestra breathes fitfully
The music of the spheres.

Mimes, in the form of God on high,
Mutter and mumble low,
And hither and thither fly-
Mere puppets they, who come and go
At bidding of vast formless things
That shift the scenery to and fro,
Flapping from out their Condor wings
Invisible Woe!

That motley drama–oh, be sure
It shall not be forgot!
With its Phantom chased for evermore,
By a crowd that seize it not,
Through a circle that ever returneth in
To the self-same spot,
And much of Madness, and more of Sin,
And Horror the soul of the plot.

But see, amid the mimic rout
A crawling shape intrude!
A blood-red thing that writhes from out
The scenic solitude!
It writhes!–it writhes!–with mortal pangs
The mimes become its food,
And seraphs sob at vermin fangs
In human gore imbued.

Out–out are the lights–out all!
And, over each quivering form,
The curtain, a funeral pall,
Comes down with the rush of a storm,
While the angels, all pallid and wan,
Uprising, unveiling, affirm
That the play is the tragedy, "Man,"
And its hero the Conqueror Worm.

He's me! Um, if I were a gorgeous 30-year-old gay man....

I love that he is who he wants to be, to the fullest extent, without apologies or shame, and refuses to conform to social expectations.

Plus, did I mention he's gorgeous?
  2. computers:
That's lame, I actually listed that?

Well, I work with computers, and live most of my social life on the internet. Plus I definitely have a fondness for the actual machines... am I the only one who squees at the adorable cuteness of the old-fashioned computers you see in movies sometimes? Seeing a computer from even a few years ago is like a trip into the ancient past....
  3. feminism:
    Yeah... duh.

The band. "Live Through This" is a great record. And Courtney Love was cool before she got all lame.

It was a pretty good show.

I put that as an interest? Well, it's fun to figure stuff out, I guess....
  7. pig:
Mmmmm.... Raymond Watts. New Pig November 8!!!! I don't really need to explain this interest; I already babble about him constantly, and listen to nothing else on my MP3 player.

  9. the cruxshadows:
I'm kind of getting bored of them, to be honest. The whole earnest, sincere thing is not quite connecting with my increasingly dirty cynical mind. Alas.

Having been vegan for 10 years, I hardly stop think about it anymore. It's just normal.

Awww... Poe. I was a near miss for posting Poe. There's just such a lovely rhythym in his verse, a haunting sort of sing-song. I think "Annabel Lee" was another poem I had to memorize at one time in my school career. Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But yeah, "Conquerer Worm." And much of Madness, and more of Sin, And Horror the soul of the plot. Grim, grim Poe. Love it.
