How silly of me to even question that they were doing Dean/Castiel intentionally. Of course they are.

"You know Sam and Dean Winchester are psychotically, irrationally, erotically codependent on each other, right?"

I, uh, did a spit take and had to rewind to make sure I'd heard that last one right.

Talk about subtext becoming text! I love being so on the same page as the writers that I don't even have to bother reading between the lines.

Heh - I did a spit-take on that line, too. That was episode 100, so they clearly decided to mark the occasion with even more fanservice than usual. Which, for Supernatural, is saying something.

Ah, that totally explains it. It's so sweet that they made their 100th episode fanservicy, instead of making it about the creator's ego or agenda or whatever.

Yeah, I'm not always confident that their meta is meant affectionately, but I definitely thought it was there. And what's nice about the episode is that you not only have the winks at the audience, you get some quality emotional scenes too - Sam insisting on having faith in Dean and Castiel beating the crap out of him. (Which, heh, study in contrasts, but Dean really needed both a pat on the head and a kick in the ass.)

Oh, yeah, absolutely. It was a fantastic episode all around--lots of fanservice but also good drama and really amazing character stuff. I loved Castiel beating Dean up, because there was so much going on there--Castiel was disappointed and angry at Dean, but both emotions come from a place of caring about him and still wanting to save him. And Sam having faith in Dean was just... I think it's part of why I don't see the slash, because I find the brother dynamic more moving, the way that Sam looks up to his big brother and Dean can't bear to disappoint his little brother.
