Meh, not enough Dean.

I don't mind a "too depressed to care" arc, but it needs more focus more on him as a character, and a tie in with a main plot. I'm so sick of Sam's soul/wall/hallucinations dominating the show, while Dean's in the background reacting and having very few episodes per season actually focused on him. :(

*sigh*

I'm also upset because a significant amount of my enjoyment of the show in recent seasons came from the Dean/Cas ho!yay, and apparently that is now gone for good. :( :(

I did enjoy the episode if looked at just on its own merits. I mean, it had Death! And Lucifer! And I liked that they wrapped up the Cas as God thing in one episode.

But you're right: Dean has been in reactive mode for a long time now. And I really didn't like my first glimpse of Cas as Leviathan.

It was awesome to see Death, though I think SPN's version of Lucifer is very dull and I'm not at all happy to see him back.

Yeah, "Dean has been in reactive mode" is a good way to put it. Dean used to be the shiniest thing on the show, and now he's in the background behind Sam and whatever-Misha's-playing-this-week. :(

It's like the writers have run out of steam and don't have anything new to say about him, which is terrible because Dean is freaking awesome and it's painful to see him wasted like this. Even their attempt last season, with Lisa and Ben, was poorly developed and felt like an obligatory afterthought rather than a real storyline with any dramatic stakes.

And what is at stake with Dean now? The only open question seems to be "at what point will the depression and alcoholism cause him to give up entirely?" Such a sad change from early seasons where there was so much going on with him.

And *sign* the waste of Dean/Cas is criminal.

I did try watching the first two eps of Vampire Diaries but um... unless is changes dramatically and in pretty much every way, I don't think it's for me. :(

Give The Vampire Diaries till episode 5 before you give up, if you can. Something significant does happen then that may change how you feel.

BTW, did you have a Dean/Cas rec list somewhere? I thought you did, but I got a new computer and don't have all my bookmarks.

Oh, and regarding The Vampire Diaries again, it may not be apparent in the first couple of episodes, but it's got a number of smart, strong female characters, which is one of the reasons I like it so much. Not trying to talk you into anything (not that I could do that *g*), but I'm assuming that you're not liking it because it seems "Twilight-like" and vampire romance novel in the beginning, and it's really not that at all.

Yes it's the freaking arc that never ends! And it's so unrelatable and silly and boring. :( :( :(
