damn snow

I spent the weekend snowed in at my parents' house; we had over two feet. It would have been really cool if it hadn't meant that my entire family was trapped in a house together for two days with no escape.

Witness my father throwing a hissy fit and threatening to kill the driver of the snowplow that pushed 4 feet of snow directly in front of our driveway. Witness my brother stalking off in a huff at dinner because the rest of us "chew too loud." Witness my mother explaining my father's bad mood with "it's because he hasn't gotten any in a week." And then everyone starts bitching at each other and/or sulking moodily. In case I'd forgotten why I moved to New York, this was a fine reminder.

I pleaded with my father to drive me to the train station yesterday, but as it was still snowing with no sign of letting up, he declined. This was probably for the best, as the train station is a half hour from our house normally, and it would have taken an hour and a half to get there yesterday. But today I really had to get home because I have a class, and I had already missed it once and I had a paper due. (I checked the school website, which said classes would run as usual). So I stayed up until 5am writing the paper (without actually having the book with me, as I hadn't planned to be snowed in), then I got up at 8 so Dad could drive me to the train station. We ventured through slick and dangerous highways, got to the train, and I took the hour and a half ride back to the city. Got home, dropped off my huge bag, got my schoolbooks together, walked to school (dodging 4 foot snowdrifts and inching along slick icy sidewalks). My 20-minute walk took 40 minutes, but I made it to class ... only to discover a little sign announcing that the class is cancelled today. WAAAH. I could still be in *bed* right now. So I'm currently at the computer lab trying to work up the energy to make the long trek home. I'm going to reward myself by ordering food (assuming the local restaurants will deliver) and catching up on all the fic I missed over the weekend.

The one nice thing about being at my parents' house was that I got to hang out with my cats for a few days. My cats are my favorite people in the whole world. I wish that they could come live with me in NY, but my apartment is tiny, my roommate is allergic, and I know that they would be bored sick. It was so cool to see them though.

Vanilla, who is 16 and still healthy, not to mention beautiful (pure white with big green eyes and little pink ears), has taken to sitting on the kitchen table (not where we eat) commenting on all the activities of the house. Seriously, she talks nonstop: "Meh! Now! Mah! Mauw-Wah!" My mom thinks it's annoying, but I think it's the coolest thing ever. I just stand there and talk back to her, and she talks to me. I wonder what she's saying...

Angel, our beautiful striped cat with Cleopatra eyes, loves to cuddle. Whenever anyone sits and watches TV, you can guarantee that she'll come over and situate herself on your lap (and will get very angry with you when you finally get up).

Shadow is the least spoiled of our cats. She was a neighborhood stray who I adopted and slowly socialized (by leaving food for her and sitting outside with her, and finally getting her to let me pet her), and she is also the mother of Lucifer (my most precious cat). She was locked in the basement all week, because she usually tries to kill the other cats when we let her in the house, but we couldn't leave her outside in this nasty weather. The thing is, even though she's vicious to the other cats, she's the sweetest cat in the whole world when it comes to people. She's not used to people being nice to her, so when you are she appreciates it immensely (whereas the other cats just take it for granted). She's very shy, but once she lets you start petting her she loves to cuddle and she purrs and she's just so sweet.

Lucifer, my favorite, who was born in our laundry room 5 years ago on Valentine's day, is the friendliest cat I've ever met. He follows me everywhere I go, sits *next* to me rather than on me, loves to be petted, and doesn't mind *anything*. Seriously, like, my brother will pick him up and swing him around; he's fine with it. My mom picks him up and hangs him upside-down, and he just hangs there like it's a perfectly normal situation. He's grown up with us and no one has ever hurt him, so he trusts us all *completely*. I love spending time with him. (Unfortunately the other cats hate him because he thinks he's a dog, which is a whole different story. He's a misfit.)

The good news is that, in an attempt to avoid my family at all costs, I managed to archive quite a bit of fic while I was at my parents' house. (Including updates of "Tabula Obscura," "Redeeming Spike's Ass," and "Believe").

I also managed to download most of "Get it Done" on my dad's computer, although I didn't get the full effect of it since I was distracted and his monitor is terribly dark. I haven't really given it enough thought to come up with an actual analysis yet. But I was happy with the Spike parts, although I hated Buffy (but then I always hate Buffy; well, maybe hate is too strong a word. I disdain Buffy. She just grates on me to no end.)

Anyway, it looks like it'll be a good episode; I can't wait to see it on the actual TV.

Okay, now that I'm warm and less exhausted, I'm going to trek back to my apartment and catch up on fic and list mail. And order food. :)
