Everyone's doing this meme. I don't usually post these, because I think "everyone's going to think I'm selfish and hate me for posting this," even though I never think that about anyone else who posts these.
But anyway, I really enjoyed reading the responses in other people's journals. It's neat and interesting how people in fandom are so interconnected. So, I'll post this anyway:
1. How did you first hear of/meet me?
2. Where and when did you first hear my name/see my work/meet me?
3. With what people/series/groups etc. do you associate me and/or my writing?
NOTE: This is not a praise or feedback meme, this is just to track the path of my online presence and to see the connections involved, to find out how people link together.
(Just ignore the whole "writing" part, since I don't write.)
Also, I just looked at my entry from last night, and man, I really shouldn't be allowed to post after 3am.

And I wouldn't be without knowing you;)
Though LJ ate my kitty appreciation/Word over the Joss issues post:)

Date: 2004-02-20 08:58 am (UTC)I first stumbled across you when I very first poked my nose into this on-line fandom. I found the Bloody Awful Poet Society website after doing a search on "James Marsters" and found their wonderful archive of fic links and convention reports.
Someone named Laura had written up the best summation of a convention ever and had supplied a bunch of photos. I was so thrilled because I'd read and admired the stories written by the people who were in the photos.
A while later I'd managed to write "Who's Been Shaggin' in My Bed?" and you sent me a note asking to archive it. I went to your site to check it out and found another great convention report. Then I realized you were the same Laura and I was just insanely excited about that. WOW! You'd shared this great info and built this beautiful site. So, basically, I was stuck with total awe -- and still am.
Re:
Date: 2004-02-20 12:02 pm (UTC)It's neat that you found me through my con reports first! :)

Date: 2004-02-20 09:29 am (UTC)Actually, I think you'd sent me feedback on Modus when I was posting it in chunks on FF.net, but since I didn't really know who the heck you were at the time, that don't count.

3. I associate
And, just a side note: you asked in a comment recently about archiving some of those stories I keep forgetting to revise. Ahem. I'm sorry, life's been crazy and of course will continue to be. But I'll try to get it done soon, and will let you know when I have. And yes, I'm still very interested in having stories on AAS. There is no more rocking archive on the Net.
Re:
Date: 2004-02-20 11:46 am (UTC)And it is so cool that I was able to archive it. It was great to be able to help you out, and it gave me the push I needed to make the site better--reviews, email updates, etc. And helped me get over my weird hesitancy to read slash.
I'm so glad you came to LJ. So many ultra-talented people tend to be kind of caught up in their own mythos, but you always astound me with how kind and thoughtful you are toward others. I honestly can't remember you saying something unkind about anyone. Plus, you always have something interesting to say, and you say everything so well.
Uh, I think this is asking the same thing, isn't it? Or is it asking about meeting in person? We haven't done that, so...
It is phrased weirdly, isn't it? Ah, well, I didn't write the meme.
Oh yeah--have you thought about coming to Writercon? It would be so cool to meet you.
It's hard to say who I associate you with, specifically, because you're so tied in with so many writers for me. M'Sally, Rahirah, Peasant, Herself, Chase, Anna S.... You know. The BNFs. Heh.
I so don't deserve to be compared to those immensely talented people. But thank you for saying it. ;)
The secret for an untalented person to meet all the BNFs: start an archive.
you asked in a comment recently about archiving some of those stories I keep forgetting to revise. Ahem. I'm sorry, life's been crazy and of course will continue to be
Don't apologize! I understand that you're busy. I just wanted to check, not make you feel guilty or anything. Please don't stress over it. Though of course I'll be delighted to archive when/if you get something together.
Re:
Date: 2004-02-20 12:44 pm (UTC)WriterCon no es posible this year, I'm afraid. Wish I could. Might be in NYC sometime late summer, though. And would love to meet if that works out.

Date: 2004-02-20 12:52 pm (UTC)I hope the NYC thing works out. It would be very cool to see you.
Drink the Poison
Date: 2004-02-20 09:50 am (UTC)So I have to say it was All About Spike first (no pun intended), then the lists and when I came to LJ it was pretty much a no brainer to friend you. I always enjoy your insights and we agree on many of the stuff on fandom (soul, schmoul!). Even when we don't agree - it's always a pleasure to hear your thoughts.
Note: I loved your handle from the start, but never have met someone who is so *not* about poison. You are a really sweet person, hon. In the best sense of the word.
Re: Drink the Poison
Date: 2004-02-20 10:51 am (UTC)(I know, I have weird issues.)
I remember you from way back, the Troika lists. You were like, one of the core members, whereas I mostly just lurked.
Then, of course, I met you at Shore Leave. And again here in NY.
I agree with you on a whole lot, and you have such an interesting perspective--I always enjoy hearing your thoughts.
Thank you for saying such kind things! (Obviously you've not seen me in whiny bitch mode.)
Btw, when are you going to be in NY again?
Re: Drink the Poison
Date: 2004-02-20 11:25 am (UTC)On the bitch mode: I absolutely love your rants. No, not because you are upset and I take joy in that - but because you still manage to be so good at putting the reasons you are upset in such a clear way and it fascinates me. I'm one of those people who lose coherence when pissed off, so I admire people who can bitch eloquently :)
Which in my case, is pretty weird. Since the little fic I wrote was 90% gay and my one original character (Mary Sue) is also gay.
I'll probably be in NY on my way to Vegas - yep Writercon! I'll probably spend the summer in NY with J. *fingers crossed* I look forward to hanging out if you are up to it!
Re: Drink the Poison
Date: 2004-02-20 12:10 pm (UTC)LOL. Whereas I only tend to be coherent when I am pissed off--otherwise I don't have the motivation to put the effort into articulating something clearly.
Ooh, you're going to be here this summer!! And at Writercon?! Awesome. I'm so looking forward to seeing you. :)

Date: 2004-02-20 11:01 am (UTC)2. Where and when did you first hear my name/see my work/meet me? - Liz introduced us at the Creation Fangoria convention in NYC a year ago now.
3. With what people/series/groups etc. do you associate me and/or my writing? - I actually just associate you with you, because I met you before I got to know your online presence. Now that I know you online as well, I still just know you as you! ;oD

Re:
Date: 2004-02-20 12:16 pm (UTC)And of course you must come to TT, we throw a wicked party!
Re:
Date: 2004-02-20 12:23 pm (UTC)Yup, I'll be at the dessert party. Though I doubt I'll be able to eat any of the desserts! I guess I'll bring some vegan chocolate or something.
I need to figure out something for Nick to sign ... too bad they don't sell Spike/Xander merchandise!
Re:
Date: 2004-02-20 12:38 pm (UTC)Re:
Date: 2004-02-20 12:47 pm (UTC)Plus, I'm tired of generic 8x10s in general. I want to start getting cool stuff signed. (My signed JM action figure, for example--that's cool. The 8x10s? Meh.)
Maybe I can find another trading card somewhere .... I'd just like to have something more substantial....
Oh, btw, how much would you estimate it would cost round trip to fly from NYC to Toronto for Toronto Trek?
Re:
Date: 2004-02-20 12:58 pm (UTC)If I found a collectible card game card with Xander on it, would you like that to have for him to sign? I have literally HUNDREDS of doubles, I just have to find a double of him.
Re:
Date: 2004-02-23 10:13 am (UTC)Thank you so much for offering me a Xander card! I appreciate it so much. I'm going to be keeping my eyes out for something with Xander and Spike together, but if I can't find that, a card would be great. :)
Re:
Date: 2004-02-23 10:16 am (UTC)I've got all the cards set aside for you, I'll just bring 'em and you can choose what you want...
Re:
Date: 2004-02-20 03:04 pm (UTC)- one limited Xander character card from the Angel's Curse deck
- three Xander Companion cards (all limited), one each from the Pergamum Prophecy, Angel's Curse and Class of '99 decks (that's all three decks they made, by the way)
- twelve various cards, limited and unlimited from all three decks, that picture him prominantly.
Your choice! I'll bring 'em with me.

Thank you for saying nice things. BTW, if you ever want any specific kind of vegan recipe, just let me know. :)

Date: 2004-02-20 12:16 pm (UTC)I didn't realize All About Spike was yours for a while--I visited and fell in love with the archive, and gushed about it on TWoP, but didn't make the connection. I was just thrilled that someone had put together such a high-quality Spike archive.
I associate you with love of Spike; All About Spike; loathing of Buffy; and love of Spander.

All good things. :) Though I'm surprised you associate me with Spander; I tend to be a "pairing is irrelevant" person. Though if forced to choose I'm sure I'd pick S/X or S/A.

Re:
Date: 2004-02-20 12:27 pm (UTC)Ah ha. And that's how I heard of you--I forget who recommended Behind Blue Eyes, but I really enjoyed it. It's so cool to discover a great author that you'd never heard of before.

Date: 2004-02-20 12:41 pm (UTC)Someone in a chat gave me the link to All About Spike. I browsed the site and just was amazed at the amazing fic you had archived there-- most of my reading attempts before then were not of the good, so it was really cool to find a place with a lot of great fic, all centered around my favorite character. Your site was a big reason for getting me hooked (I remember especially loving how you sorted by Time Period, since there are times I love reading fic set in particular seasons/episodes).
I can't remember how I found out you had lj, but once I realized it I friended you right away-- and I know you're not asking for a suckup fest at all, but I'm perfectly honest when I say I love reading pretty much every post you make, especially ones with your insight toward fandom.
Re:
Date: 2004-02-20 01:02 pm (UTC)I think we see a lot of things in similar ways. I always enjoy reading your posts; even when I disagree they give me something to think about.
Where did I first hear of you...? Did you submit a fic to me? I can't remember; it seems like you were always around. I definitely associate you with LJ more than anything else. And with Spike/Fred. :)

Date: 2004-02-20 01:01 pm (UTC)I stayed around for the convention review, Buffy talk, and your concert talk. I'm a Brooklyn girl, and I miss going to shows in the city, so it's nice to read music and concert posts. I also love your site, where I can find good Spike fic (because TV Spike makes me and the baby Jesus cry.) Lastly, you wrote a post once about Han and Leia being your ship; it was a great read and a nice break from Buffy ship posts.
I guess when I think of you, I think Spike, un-souled and un-Buffied (or would that be un-Spuffied?)

Hee. Either way. If I never see the word "Spuffy" again, it'll be too soon.

Date: 2004-02-20 01:06 pm (UTC)I first heard of you on BAPS, I think. Definitely one of those lists, anyway. I think - think - I actually contacted you about travelling from NYC to Cleveland, but that didn't work out. I then heard of you for sure through allaboutspike. I really can't remember when that was, but I surfed onto the site by following a succession of bookmarks from other fic sites and started reading. I first met you at Cleveland, where you stood out cause you're so damn pretty. I associate you with allaboutspike, fandom commentary, life in NYC, big black boots, veganism and bands I've never heard of. :)

Really? I don't remember that, but it could've just been that I didn't know who you were.
I wish we'd had more time to talk in Cleveland. I'm so looking forward to WriterCon, where it's not all rushed and you don't have to deal with all the silly celebrity stuff. I'm much more interested in the hanging out and chatting anyway.

Date: 2004-02-20 11:05 pm (UTC)i got some horribly sad results that made me despair at the sorry state of this thing called fanfic. i found some hope with a couple archives that turned up that actually had some well-written stuff. but the archives were closed and woefully out of date. i found ficbitch, which rocked. and then peasant's plot, which gave me my fanged four fetish.
then i found allaboutspike.com.
wow.
it was the biggest, best-designed, easiest to navigate archive site i had found and the fics it contained were actually quite good.
i got inspired to write "chain" when i realized fanfic wasn't just silliness as i had feared. i had no intention of actually posting it.
then i changed my mind and decided to ask my stupid questions as to how to go about posting my fic somewhere at the allaboutspike discussion board.
and the moderator was really nice and didn't treat me like the idiot newbie that i was. she gave me some good advice that i mostly followed. except for the beta thing, cuz i was too impatient for that. (yes, i suck. ::hangs head::)
had the moderator smacked me down or mocked me for my massive ignorance i probably would have backed away slowly and disappeared from the internet altogether.
and then that moderator actually showed an interest in my silly little story and encouraged me to continue it.
so basically, everyone has that moderator to blame for irfikos' presence on the internet.
::points finger::
it's ALL. YOUR. FAULT.
i don't go to the boards or anything all that much so i don't know what you get up to there. but your lj rocks and i'm glad you didn't give it up.
Re:
Date: 2004-02-23 11:00 am (UTC)I remember being kind of nervous because you were typing in all lowercase. And usually when someone types in all lowercase, their fic is *also* in all lowercase, and reads as if written by an eight-year-old. But then you posted a few more times and I realized that you were way smart. So I'm glad I gave you the benefit of the doubt! (I mean, I probably would have been nice even if you had turned out to be an eight-year-old, because everyone deserves encouragement, but still. I'm glad I took you seriously, because you're one of the best writers in this fandom.)
I'm sooo glad I encouraged you to write "Chain." Yay! :)
i don't go to the boards or anything all that much so i don't know what you get up to there. but your lj rocks and i'm glad you didn't give it up.
Thank you! LJ is pretty much the only place I post now. My forum is dead, dead, dead. Though I keep it around in case, y'know, someone like you shows up again. I do occasionally post a sentence or two on BAPS, but mostly it's just LJ.
Oh, BTW, you posted the other day about song lyrics. I loved the lyrics at the beginning of each section of "Chain." They fit/aided the mood of the story, and it wasn't necessary to know the song to "get" the lyrics. It would be really cool if you kept that up in the sequel. (The objections to "song fic" are when the song is interwoven into the story, which is painful and lame, especially when the reader doesn't know the song. I've never heard a valid objection to lyrics at the start or end of a story or its chapters.)

Date: 2004-02-21 09:18 am (UTC)2. I first heard your name/started thinking of you as a person and not a website because of your Con reports, and then because of your LJ.
3. I don't associate you with people/series/groups, other than as webmistress/archivist at AAS. I associate you with standards of writing. Whenever I'm working on a fic I always have, in the middle of my mind, the concern that I will or won't be worthy of archiving at AAS. Not that AAS approval is the only criterion of fic quality, but it's certainly a useful standard to strive for.
You were the starting point for my BtVS/AtS online fandom experience. I lucked out by finding AAS almost immediately, and through AAS and your LJ I've found other writers and points of contact.
Re:
Date: 2004-02-23 11:04 am (UTC)That's ... really scary, actually, that you consider AAS approval to be a standard. Don't! I'm arbitrary and weird and often clueless. I can't take the kind of responsibility!
Er, sorry. I mean, uh... thanks?
I realised that not only was fanfic a fascinating and complex writing genre, but that Spike was the focus of my Buffy addiction
Awesome. I'm so glad that I helped you realize how great fic (and Spike) can be. :)
