tumblr?

I do not understand tumblr at all (how do you have conversations???) but it gives me things like this so I keep going back and spending inordinate amounts of time there…

(But seriously I do not understand how to interact. The etiquette is incomprehensible. And when I see something interesting, how do I find where people might be talking about it? I mean I guess it’s mostly just like, shiny pictures anyway, not a lot to talk about, but I keep getting glimpses of SPN wank that I can’t find the source of because it’s like, a zillion reblogs with a line added. And what about the etiquette around adding people–is it like eljay with all the ~drama~ if you “defriend”? Is it rude to reblog too much stuff from the same person? Do you get shunned for spamming if you post too often? I’M SO CONFUSED. This is why I never got into Twitter, except Twitter was a lot less tempting because it didn’t give me an endless influx of pictures of Tom Hiddleston looking beautiful…)

I'm thinking about getting a tumblr myself since Once Upon a Time fandom seems to have coalesced there! That is where the fic and the pretty pictures are being posted and I need these things in my life even if other parts of tumblr confuse the hell out of me.

But I have no idea how you have a conversation on tumblr and finding original sources of anything is a maze. One thing I can guarantee from my months of lurking on the Once and Carlyle tags is that no matter what there will be DRAMA. It seems a place designed for everyone to let their id hang out in public all the time.

I ended up going over there because it was the only place I could find Sleep No More fandom. I guess it is a tailor-made place for new fandoms to spring up quickly!

But, yeah, it is pure id. I hope the more interesting places like Dreamwidth won't end up as ghost towns.

I've had a tumblr since January and I have yet to figure any of this out! It's such a weird platform. It seems impossible to have a conversation. I have decided to treat tumblr as a mutual admiration society where I reblog things that make me happy, saving meaningful social interaction for LJ.

My general impression is that un-following someone may cause a bit of drama but not nearly as much as on LJ, unless it is someone you interact with frequently. I'm not sure how broadly applicable that impression is.

Ah, ok. Well, hopefully I will start to figure it out! I'm glad places like DW/LJ are still around for those of us who are more interested in conversations and meta as well. :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds tumblr incredibly confusing. Not that I devoted a significative amount of time investigating it, but still, I feel less stupid now.

It is very confusing! As a web developer I am just like WHAT ARE THEY DOING? The navigation is so nonsensical. But, well, it's exploded in popularity so obviously something about it works.
