Feb. 14th, 2006 11:21 amToday is a wonderful day...
It's Lucifer's birthday!!!!
Eight years ago today, in the laundry room of my parents' house in New Jersey, Lucifer's mother Shadow (a beautiful, sweet black stray cat who I'd made friends with) gave birth to Lucifer and his three siblings. Lucifer was the second born (I have it on videotape) and his head got stuck coming out. We all thought he was going to die, but Shadow eventually pushed him out and started licking him, and finally he started making teeny little squeaking baby kitty noises that meant he was breathing.
And ever since then, he's been the greatest cat ever. Sweet, fun, adventurous, but most of all--cool. Being in Lucie's presence could calm anyone; he's just totally accepting and trusting and relaxed.
I gave him a pile of treats for breakfast. I'll have to find something fun at Petco to bring home to him tonight.
I took some photos of him the other day in the bathtub (trying to drink out of the faucet). I'll post those here later so you can all see how adorable he is. >:)
( Movie Meme )
Last night I was working until 8pm and talking to my former coworker Sarah about "relationships." Interesting conversation. Sarah's awesome.
Forgot to mention this: I watched two movies over the weekend, Velvet Goldmine and American Psycho.
( weird rant about Velvet Goldmine, American Psycho, Fight Club, and the emptiness of consumer culture )
PS: Excellent thread over at the Hydrogen Board imagining a Chemlab/Pig tour. *sigh* If only.
And I must say, I love it when the bands write their own slash fiction:
And it goes from there.... ("The Brokeback Techrat tour anyone?" "BROKE-DICK METRONOME" "Rivetback Mountain" "Tesseract Fountain"....)
PPS: Did you guys watch the Daily Show last night? The Cheney thing actually didn't strike me as that funny when I first heard it, but when Jon got ahold of it, I thought I was going to die laughing.
PPPS: Celebrate International Quirkyalone Day. (Great link; check it out.)

Feb. 13th, 2006 02:23 pmEverybody's doing it:
Johari Window
Nohari Window
Hey, look at the snow.
I went out briefly yesterday (my caffeine addiction overcame my laziness, so I went to the corner deli for coffee). NYC is so neat when it's snowing--there's a peaceful silence that you never get otherwise, because of the lack of traffic and the way snow muffles sound. And there's such a tranquility when everything is covered in white.
Of course, it loses its loveliness quickly when you're late for work, sliding precariously along the sidewalk and climbing over gigantic mounds of dirty snow at every corner.
I had two strange dreams last night. In one, I was in a big meeting full of business people, because my company was working somehow with Raymond Watts. Our former publicity person was talking to his lawyers and reassuring him that everyone at our company likes and believes in his work. And we were trying to convince him to come to DragonCon, and going over a preliminary schedule. We're a publisher, so in the dream it was like he'd written a book.
The other dream was very unusual for me--a sort of epic fantasy type thing in which a force of ultimate evil had caused the sun to stop rising, and I was part of a group of people on a quest to restore the sun. The part I remember most vividly is that another force for good (sort of like gods, not my group of humans) was trying to make the sun rise, but they lacked the essential ingredient, so a sort of fake-looking metal sun would rise in the sky, fall, rise again in a different form, struggle, but never cast any real sunlight.
The world was in a dreary twilight haze. I was on the side of a tall hill (covered with rocks and small shrubs), and the sun they were attempting to lift was to my left. In front of me was the emptiness where the devil (?) had taken the sun. My group was trying to fight the (devil?) so at some point a bunch of us ran down there and did something (magical?) to it, but nothing worked. I was the last person, however, and I had something up my sleeve--some kind of disc, like a Netflix DVD, of which I had the last in existence (at least that anyone knew about). I slipped it into the darkness while the devil was distracted, laughing at all the failed people who'd gone before me.
The disc wouldn't actually cause the sun to rise, but it was a warning that I knew how and was going to begin my method of restoring the sun. The disc first caused glitter to rise up, little silver sparkles in the air, which didn't do much. But then they zoomed outward, like shooting stars, so bright they were blinding and scary, leaving bright streaks in the sky. More streaks followed the silver ones, these golden, and the streaks stayed in the sky and began to glow, with real sunlight, not artificial light, and the world was lit again as if the sun had risen. This caused all the people to rally and restore their effort to bring back the sun for real.
Yeah. Strange. And I remember so vividly, standing on the hill watching the fake sun try to rise, trying to work myself up to fight to restore the real sun.

This thing says you're supposed to post a picture, but if it's too much effort, don't bother.
This thing says you're supposed to post a picture, but if it's too much effort, don't bother.
Casting Call
I think it's inevitable that as we read each other's journals we create mental pictures of each other. Post this on your own journal to find out who your friends see when they read about your life.
Two Rules:
1. The person must be in the movies or on TV (but doesn't have to be an actor/actress). The person can be specific to a role (e.g. Jennifer Elhe's Elizabeth Bennet) or just the person herself. (note added--actors can totally be dead.)
2. You have to post a link to a picture of said person in the comments.

Anyway...
List 5 reasons why you are a dork. And make them good reasons.
Justify them. Explain them. Be loud and proud about how big of a dork
you are! Then pick the 5 biggest dorks you know and have them do the
meme.
1. I read massive amounts of fanfiction. For almost three years, I read nearly every decent story written about Spike that I could find, and I archived many at my very own fanfiction website. I get into arguments with people about whether fanfiction counts as a legitimate form of art (it absolutely does). And I'll read almost anything if it's written well, no matter how NC-17 or taboo. (RPF is the only exception; it's a personal squick.)
2. My idea of a really good time is to have friends over to stay up really late, eat snack food, watch movies/TV shows, and get into deep involving discussions about what we're watching.
3. I refuse to buy the DVD versions of Star Wars because they've been corrupted by stupid digital crap. I'm sticking with the real movies for the rest of my life, no matter how worn out these VHS tapes get. (And, related: I've seen the originals something like 500 times each.)
4. I don't dress up at conventions (aside from my usual semi-goth regalia), but I think it's awesome when other people do.
5. Sometimes I'm late for work because I'm listening to a really good song and can't bear to turn it off in the middle.
[I'm not tagging people; I can never remember who has already done it. If you're intrigued, then consider yourself tagged. You're on LiveJournal--you're all dorks. ;) ]
Also: Darth Vader vs Luke Skywalker. Hilarious.
Here we are now, entertain us

Feb. 22nd, 2005 01:24 pmThis is a meme that's going around. I probably should've posted it yesterday, but whatever:
Lurkers out there, yo, today's your day. Whether you're a LJ-lurker or from someplace outside reading this journal, you are the reason this journal isn't locked by default. So, come out and say 'hi' or something. Tell me what you're doing here, how you feel, who you are, whatever. No need to be shy. Feel free to post anonymously!
I'm a bit curious about this, since I've been kind of friends-locking by default lately.
Robot soldiers. So creepy. Didn't these guys see "Terminator"?
I'm trying to think of 10 things I've done that most people probably haven't. Some of these things are kind of unmentionable, or depressing, or both, so I won't mention those. Let's see... what is there that is semi-interesting and suitable for public consumption?... I'm pretty boring, really....
1. Went to a different school every year for 6 years. (Most dramatic was going from living in the middle of the woods in Indiana and attending Catholic school to living in a tiny apartment 20 yards from the beach in Puerto Rico the next year. And going swimming pretty much every single day that year.)
2. Co-wrote, filmed, and edited a 10 minute student movie about zombies. (And a bunch of other silly amateur movies, but that was the best.)
3. Got a perfect score (800) on the verbal part of the SAT. I think I got a perfect score on the writing part of the PSAT, too; I got a National Merit Scholarship out of it.
4. Hung out backstage at music venues all over NYC--Irving Plaza was probably the biggest--and met lots of different bands (including the Genitorturers, Switchblade Symphony, Godhead...) all before age 20. And slept in Penn Station, multiple times, and went to school the next day.
5. Was in the front row of a Marilyn Manson concert in their heyday, against the barrier, getting purple bruises on my hip-bones and dodging body surfers. Met John 5 afterwards and got a photo.
6. Read thousands and thousands of Buffy fics, and archived about one thousand of them. (Well, probably most of you guys have read that many.)
7. Worked behind the scenes at a bunch of Buffy cons; probably the most amusing thing was Alexis Denisof running off in the middle of a photoshoot to go pee, and making an announcement about it to the line before he went.
8. Watched the three original Star Wars movies at least 500 times each, and can still recite entire scenes.
9. Was onstage for an hour in London in front of 800 people with a panel that included BtVS writer Jane Espenson. (
paratti has also done this. ;)
10. Was on the front page of the local paper, in a photo and interview. (With 3 friends, after Columbine, trying to lessen the persecution of Goth kids.)

I am unsatisfied with my responses to the senior year meme. So I decided that, since senior year was such a nonentity for me, I would redo my answers. Only this time it's about 10th grade instead of senior year.... Because in 10th grade I actually felt somewhat involved in high school life instead of being emotionally numb and just killing time until I could move far away.

So here's that music meme
Dec. 15th, 2004 10:17 amI couldn't resist this one. Even if no one guesses, I had fun doing it.
Anyway, music meme!
The rules:
Step 1: Get your playlist together, put it on random, and play
Step 2: Pick your favorite lines from the first 20 songs that play
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song the lines come from
Step 4: Cross out the songs when someone guesses correctly
Most of these are pretty easy, actually. There are only a couple of obscure/underground songs here (and also one song that I'm horribly embarrassed about--guess which!).
1.The grabbing hands grab all they can / All for themselves / After all it's a competitive world
(
bogwitch - Depeche Mode, Everything Counts)
2. Repentance won't alter the course / There's no escape from myself
3. Minutes slowly turn to hours / Another moment passes by / Seconds of eternity / I wonder if it's time to say goodbye
4.I want to fly / I want to run / I want to hide from you / Then I want to crawl back and lie down and hold on to you
(
cluegirl - Tapping the Vein, The Ledge)
5.The killer in me is the killer in you / My love I send this smile over to you
(This is sort of a trick, because it's a goth/industrial cover of a mainstream song)
(
bogwitch - Disarm - this was originally by the Smashing Pumpkins, but the version on my playlist is a cover by 16 Volt vs. Spahn Ranch)
6.Each day I can feel it swallow, inside something took from me
(
chenanceou - Korn, Got the Life)
7.You may think that I'm out of hand / That I'm naive, I'll understand / On this occasion, it's not true / Look at me, I'm not you
(
judithiscariot - New Order, Regret)
8.Got a gun, fact I got two / That's okay, man, 'cause I love god
(
pickinguproses - Glorified G, Pearl Jam)
9.A fool could see just how much you adore me / Get down on your knees and do anything for me
(This is another cover of a famous song by a goth/industrial band.)
(
buffyx - I Touch Myself - originally by The DiVinyls, covered by the Genitorturers)
10.This is the noise that keeps me awake / My head explodes and my body aches
(
amerella - Garbage, Push It)
11. When summer fades to silence / When winter's still a dream
12.Am I wrong? / Have I run too far too get home? / Have I gone and left you here alone?
(
doyle_sb4 - Alice in Chains, Would?)
13. You know nothing about me / I know all about you
14. And I don't want to be part of your world / And I don't want to see the things you see
15.Tame me with your tenderness and break my brittle heart / Easily and elegantly tear my world apart
(
voodoo_in_tx - Depeche Mode, Surrender)
16.The sweat in your eyes the blood in your veins are listening to me / Well I want to wrap it up and swim in it until I drown
(
cluegirl - Nine Inch Nails, The Only Time)
17. Be a good girl like you're supposed to / Dominate your fears
18.It's all ending / I gotta stop pretending who we are
(
kbk - No Doubt, Don't Speak)
19.Walks on his own, with thoughts he can't help thinking / Future's above, but in the past he's slow and sinking
(
pickinguproses - Nothingman, Pearl Jam)
20.Fail to see the tragic, turn it into magic / My big top tricks will always make you happy / But we all know the hat is wearing me
(
bogwitch - Marilyn Manson, Dope Hat)

2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
5. Don't search around and look for the "coolest" book you can find. Do what's actually next to you.
"Now they had him in their talons."
From "The Key of the Kingdom: A Book of Stories and Poems for Children."
I find this sort of vaguely amusing.
Random life update: I spent the weekend sitting in my apartment being a hermit and hanging with my cats. One roommate appointment cancelled; the other was unbelievably rude. No roommate yet.
My boss called me at 10am Sunday morning (woke me up) from Norway because of website issues. Spent an hour on the phone with tech support. Fixed the issues. Went back to sleep.
Burned all my CDs to MP3s. If only I could do the same with my 200+ audio cassettes.
Continued my slow re-read of A Storm of Swords. There's this long stretch in the middle with no Jaime chapters; hard to get through. Had an idea about buildling a database-driven website to catalog all appearances of every character and location. Don't have the dedication, though. Or the money.
I've been combatting boredom by watching videos from my video collection, but the selection of movies I haven't seen recently is running really low. I watched "If Looks Could Kill," "Willow," and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," random vestiges of stuff that I collected as a 10-year-old. I still sort of like "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (Corey Feldman as Donatello ... Elias Koteas as Casey Jones ... not bad.) "If Looks Could Kill" and "Willow" are just painful, though. I can feel my brain rotting as I watch them....
What else.... continued listening to and reading up on KMFDM. I like them; in interviews, Sascha seems smart and funny and has both integrity and talent. It's always nice to see people who succeed at making art without having to sell their souls. I love that they are good to their fans, concerned about keeping prices down, answer fans' emails, stuff like that. Refreshing. Honest. (*cough*oppositeofbuffycelebrityfandom*cough*)
Anyway. I'm bored and now I have to go back to work.
